Getting this story is like pulling teeth....

Seems like not very many 40 series made it to Europe, you have found a gem.

What year is this 42?

Having seen the bj in the light of day I began to think my son was right about too much work. Apparently she had been abandoned in the barn since it rolled about 5 years ago. Bits had begun to be scavenged, noticably the winch, leaving a gaping hole in the take-off box. Likewise the brake booster reservoir tank. ( I have only just learnt what that was.) As I walked around the remains my heart sank. Not only was this going to take a lot of precious time, but what about the cost. If the grim reaper didn't get me first, my wife certainly would. Steps would have to be taken discreetly. Weighing up the cost, my first job would be to find out if, maybe it actually worked. If not, curtains! Finding 2 batteries was the first job. I didn't even know 24v cars existed. Surreptisiously purloigning one from my wifes car ,then one from our caravan, I tentatively inserted the key into the ignition. I only meant to turn once for accessories but went too far and jumped back as the starter motor burst into life.

The 3B is one of the most reliable engines out there. Replace fluids and rubber, then do a compression check on the cylinders. If everything checks out it should fire right up. YouTube is full of videos of 3B engines firing up after sitting for many years in much worse conditions (e.g. the Louisiana swap).

As for cost, if you ditch the hard top and go with a soft top, I bet you could get that back to “nice” for under $20k. If you can’t swing that, if you have a five speed transmission, I’ll buy your five speed shifter plate, cane, boots and inspection plate from you at a fair price to help you get back some of money. By recent sales, that together is all worth about $3500-$4000. And did you say you had a PTO transfer case? I might be interested in that too.

If the 3B is fine and your frame is fine, your biggest expense will be repairing the tub. If you go with an aluminum tub, that runs around $5k. A new steel one is $7500. You might get away with just replacing the firewall and windshield frame and hammering out the dents in the rest of the tub. That could be done for about $5k I think.

That is a interesting placement of the transmission shifter. Something is not right there. If you thinking of parting it a LHD BJ42 five speed is sought after but those would be 83+.

Seeing the shape of the inspection cover I would agree it was earlier for the pre 83.
Yes that is weird. I don’t know what I’m looking at. I first thought that it has a 60 series shift cover but those are farther back than the 40 series and the one in the picture looks like it might be farther forward? Or maybe the P.O. was a tall person and wanted the shift know farther forward, hence the cane bends.

I’m just curious, what are the last six digits of the VIN number. That’s the serial number. I have a September, 1980 BJ42. Production first started that month and mine was one of the first BJ42’s out of the factory, the serial number is 000144. I wonder how many BJ42’s they made in 1980, 81, 82.

Hi Vegas, Thank you for the interest but I have to tell you this story started in January 2017 and is still ongoing. I have only just thought that other nutters could be interested and decided to post the journey before the brain gives up.
