I ordered a new alternator that cranks out 120 amps, ordered a derale shroud with dual fans that move 3750 CFM and a fail safe thermostat that opens at 180*.
Then I loaded up the kayak and enjoyed Barton Springs. Will put up big red for a few weeks because I'll be out of town.

I was going for a good one at a decent price, but now my guy decided to retire today so it kinda reshuffled my priority list.

Jack is finally retiring? Good for him, but I wanted him to paint my 60 project! What's the plan now? Maybe Jimmy @CenTXFJ60 can do it. :)

Right now the plan is fix this heating issue and shop around for a good deal. Jack told me to call him when I'm back in town in case he changed his mind and decided to postpone retirement.

What kind of paint cost are you guys paying? I don’t even know what a good deal is.

LOL! That sounds like Jack .

Cim, I think paint was $300 for the clear and base when I painted the 40. I bought the primer from Eastwood's.
Did you spray it yourself? I’m kinda leaning that way as it’s the only way I can stay in my budget. Hoping maybe a case of beer to watch someone do it first and learn.
Did you spray more primer over the primer from the blaster?

The only way you guys will get a quality job at a reduced rate is to do it yourself. I’ve painted a few cruisers in the last year or more and my material costs alone are $1500-2000 for quality stuff. I’m not up to speed on Eastwood as I get my paint from a regional supplier. The advantage there is this guy owns the business and he’s extremely helpful with questions etc. he’s even been out to my shop to look at my technique etc. and did I mention how rewarding it is painting your own rig :)

Well if anybody in the Austin/SA area are doing DIY paint jobs coming up I would love to see the process. Especially how the prep looks before spraying. As I get older I love to learn new things. Mainly because I'm cheap.

Cim, Just let me know when you want to come over. I'd be glad to walk through the process and share what I've learned as well as share the mistakes I've made so you can hopefully avoid them :). I'd even be glad to shoot anything you need painted. Won't guarantee results :) but glad to give it a shot. thats the fun and easy part. The hard work is getting it ready to shoot which I'll be glad to coach you on to the best of my ability.

Sorry Mike...I feel we've hijacked your thread.

Outstanding. I'm still aways off.

We can get Mike's thread back on track. Mike, are you prepping your vehicle for paint yourself? Maybe we all can have a paint party.:worms:

Hijack away guys, the more discussions the better.

I've been thinking of a paint party, cause it can only improve the way it looks.

Sorry I'm late on replies, been traveling and now in this two week 8 to 5 class thats kicking my butt.

I'm leaning towards using a paint called Acrolon 218 that JMack used on his FJ55. Hell, I'm leaning towards doing the same color he used. It's a greyish blue like Horizon Blue or Cadet blue on a 40. The paint is an industrial/marine coating that builds up thick.

Ditto. Happy to help with prep, etc and I'd love to learn how to do it right.
