I didnt do the mod on mine but it has a Weber carb, i would have definitely just rebuilt the stock Aisin, which i just sourced one and will be rebuilding in the near future.

I get a lot of use out of my on board air setup seen here. has proven to be very handy for myself, and others I have helped who needed air. worth the time, money and sacrificed cookie sheet.

2. sliders
3. rear rack
4. rubber flaps on bobbed fenders

(PO did most of the heavy lifting with the Chevy 350 swap, brakes, power steering, lift, locker, selling it to me)

Oh, ya. 2 low is handy also. One of the little things

I will chime in too... a lot of the stuff mentioned was for trail use, if your rig will see significant road time I would suggest:

New comfy Seats (I am running Saab 93 seats)
Power Steering.
CD player and some good speakers.
Good set of tools for maintenance.

Just another .02

I forgot to mention for a DD...

CUPHOLDERS! At least one, mine is a role of Duct tape on the tranny hump.

You copy cat!;)

For me it was 4 wheel disk BRAKES!!!! I had NONE when I bought it...and while I am here I am doing a Scout PS conversion. Oh yeah...Rear Jump seats...how is that a mod? I guess it not really a "mod" so much as my 40 didn't have rear seats when I bought it...hard to take the kids without seats ;)

Front disc brakes
I can't see how power steering could come before good brakes, I suppose it makes it easier to swerve around things that you are going to run into because you can't stop in time.

drive at a speed the rig can stop from? or adjust your drums up, they work fine

Since the original post of this thread have added IPF H4 headlights and consider it to be a huge improvement. (be sure to add relays)

1. 4 wheel disk brakes. Stopping 33 much less 35 going down hill at highway speed I could probably stop 20 feet sooner than a vehicle on drums.

2. Saginaw PS

3. For an SOA (antiwrap bar)

4. Castor correction for larger tires.

5. Locker

Safety first trail ability last.

5. Locker

i guess it's about time i put in my $.02, i'd have to say a new tub is in order when the p.o. had aluminum foil to keep the elements out. :frown:

1. Going back to stock Aisen carb
2. Saginaw PS
3. Hella h4 7" replacement lights
4. 35" Goodyear MTR's

Best thing I put on my 40 is miles. I get like 14 or so for about $2.45. The more I add the more I love it, so I plan to get some more. Hope fully I finish the SOA, with disks, 35's and power steering soon, and can still get lockers and gears so I can get some more miles before the price goes up on them too much. They are really the main thing I wanted to put on it in the first place. Maybe I'll drive down to the Hammers or up to the CON this summer so I can get a bunch of them.

DANG!!! This thread is over a year old!!! I posted back in 2/05 so I'll add my recent mods on for continuity sake.

55 Rears
Dual Battery
New Retractable shoulder harness
Rear bench out of a YJ for my son
Roll bar mount storage basket
Rock lights

Still don't have my winch:rolleyes:

That is the best answer ever:)

I just finished FJ60 power steering - WOW! It exceeded my expectations. It removed a lot of slop. The assist is there - 1 finger steering at the bottom of the driveway.

Other mods I love:
33x12.50 MTs
4 inch lift to make room for 33's - w/ Doetsch-Tech 8000's - ride is nice!
Extended wheelbase when installing lift
Aussie locker (rear)

Aluminum tub
can focus on other mods insted of fighting rust every year
