1. Bigger tires
2. rear locker
3. power steering
4. sm420
5. front locker
6. Even bigger tires.

I wind up advising a lot in this same area, and it depends upon what you do with the truck as to what mods to do and in which order.......
For instance, Landpimps stock PS for most of my customers would get me in major trouble........it sucks on the trail with anything bigger than a 10" wide tire....however on a stocker it is a dream.
My list would be something like this

Brakes
Cage
PS
Lockers
Low gearing
SO, SR,
Tire size goes up as the mods continue.....

When I got my rig in 1991, It was a stock 63 fj40. So my very first mods were

Seat belts
heater
any type of roll bar

Since then everything has been modified but the first few most memorable mods were

Saginaw power steering
roll cage
Rear Detroit locker
sm420
4 wheel disc brakes

Already bought the DSRTRDR with desirable modifications for my intended use - wheeling in the desert (while maintaining road use for approach and return to home base): POs installed ARB air lockers front and rear :D, 4" spring lift (Skyjacker), 33" tires.
We changed to disk brakes in the front - MAJOR improvement! (Man-a-Fre kit) Love it !!!. :bounce:
Future modifications committed to: Painless wiring harness, hand throttle, suspension driver seat, bushing and tie rod end replacements, dual batteries, interior spruce-up (floor covering or carpet; new dash cover?).

Currently less clear on Power steering (space and fabrication issues seem quite involved); maybe I'd rather learn the subtleties of moving/steering action in the right combination on my rig. Also, how do I keep the rust at bay?
What I am confused about right now is the steering slop (pretty much on pavement only, maybe that means I should avoid it anyway?)

Claudia

Not so much of a regret as just a reference; some things should be done in a certain order. For instance, don't do a front locker b4 you do power steering! :o

I think power steering is the single nicest upgrade you can make to an early landcruiser. :) That said, my dd has manual steering and ZERO slop. Rebuilt by a great little shop in Burbank. :D

It too will have power steering one day. Just cause.

If any of you have done a mod you now regret, please speak up, save me the time and money on doing something stupidor that i will be unhappy with later.

Yeah,
A series I spring reversal unless you plan on a cut and turn of your knuckles, a double cardan front driveshaft and an extended slip joint if you plan on much flex.

Best mod: Pertronix Ignitior

Worst mod: Rancho springs (to facking hard  ) rides like crap!

DONE ALREADY:
Power steering w/ new hoses and cooler on the way
Front end from a 76' for the disks and birf w/ big brake booster
Skyjacker 4" lift
Stroked 350 SBC w/ zero miles
Turbo 350 auto tranny w/torq converter and tranny cooler
Sand blasted frame
Rino lined tub inside and under
Painless wire harness
33" tires
6 point cage not installed
New body mounts

NOT DONE:
Paint
Lockers front and rear
Bucket seats
Winch
I brought this cruiser home on a trailer and have never driven it, but it will feel like a new truck when I do.

Only one mod so far ...

I've only had my 77 FJ40 for a little while, so I've only done one mod so far. But it was a great one as far as driving comfort goes.

I installed the seat bracket extension kit from Classic Cruisers. That extra 2" made a big difference, especially when I'm stuck in So Cal traffic for an hour+.

Sean.

dual cases are my best mod so far.

Worst would have to be weatherstripping. What a waste of money if you are just going to get rid of the body eventually.

OK, I'm sucking up here, but I want my wife and kids to enjoy our trips, so I'm spending time doing:

Soundproofing

Storage/comfort

Reliability: everything must work, or have repair parts on hand: make sure you know that everything works as it should, or that you can fix what might go wrong...

I'll think of others, I'm sure...

later,

Nial

Lockers front and rear, 4" lift (kinda wish I had SOA), 4WDB, power steering (FJ60), made seat brackets to sit a little higher and farther back in comfy seats, H4 headlights made a huge difference in Alaska during the winter cuz it was dark A-LOT. Soon to have 5spd, larger fuel tank, and a 350.
Power steering is definately nice, but I would make sure your front axle is where you want it. If you stretch the wheelbase a bit you may have to redo a bit (SR etc.)
Rust prevention if the body/frame is in decent shape. Mine was doing great till I moved to Florida.

Best so far...
1 - Power steering
2 - 4 wheel disc drakes
3 - Family cage and seat's
4 - SBC conversion
5 - SOA

Still need to do...
1 - NV4500 install
2 - some sort of FI
3 - now , the twin stick shifters
Im sure there are more but its a start
Have fun
