After being bent over by Toyota for a new power steering pump. I was wondering if I could get by with any of the many after market water pump brands offered by local parts stores or if it would be best to bite the bullet and get an oem from Toyota. Do any of you have experience with the cheaper after market brands? they all seem to have a lifetime warranty but I don't want to change it every year.

Toyota W/P is not that much (want to say 150 or less), I would not use anything else, Cardone is common aftermarket for W/P and they are just OK.

My aftermarket water pump lasted less than 500 miles (OK it sat for two years before that). I am with @Landpimp - the OEM pump is well worth the money instead of doing it twice in the middle of who knows where.

Noticed mine just started leaking this morning. I know I'll pay a little more but I'm going to Toyota because I need it now and I want to replace the bypass hose while I'm in there. I'll get some discount but for now time > $$.

You were not 'bent over' by Toyota for your PS pump. You purchased a Heavy Duty pump (that lasted 30 years), for a 30 year old vehicle that cost as much as some houses when they were new. Ever buy parts for Diesel VWs ?? Next time, check MUD first for a list of discount dealers, like MUD member Beno.

The Aisin/Asco WPT-028 is the same pump that comes in the Toyota box, minus the TEQ casting. However, my experience with that water pump is the Toyota boxed is sometime even CHEAPER than aftermarket if purchased through a discount dealer.

And there is a discount code in the vendor section right now for Rock.

I WAS ABLE TO GET IT DIRECTLY FROM TOYOTA FOR 78.21 WITH A FRIENDS DICOUNT. IT WAS 104.88 ORIGINALY. CAN ON OF YOU GUYS POINT ME TO A GOOD THREAD ON REMOVEING THE PUMP LIKE THE HAVE TO REMOVES AND THE DONT HAVE TO REMOVE LIST. ALSO ARE THER ANY GOOD DIAGRAMS ON THE WEB? I HAVE A HAYNES MANUAL FOR MY YEAR BUT ALL THE DIAGRAMS ARE FOR A 94 MODEL MINES AN 87.

It makes is way easier if you remove the radiator, though some people do it with the radiator installed. i'd look at this as the opportunity to have the radiator, if it's old, boiled cleaned and tested. While you're in there it would be foolish not to replace every single hose. But since you've not posted any pictures of what you're working on, we can only guess ....

As stated, the FSM has the procedure, but there are also pretty good threads detailing how to do it. It's a pain searching from a phone, though.

Short cuts are the longest distance between two points. It nearly always saves time, frustration, and blood to remove enough equipment to adequately access the part you are changing. I've changed pumps without pulling the radiator but it was difficult. Unbolt the fan shroud so it will move around, then remove the fan. As Spike mentioned, while you're in there, change out old hoses and flush the system.

Hi, Never had a problem with Aisin pumps or Toyota, actually a decent price on Toyota. Mike

SO I DUG INTO IT LAST NIGHT . IT WASNT MY WATER PUMP BUT THE WATER PUMP PULLEY HAD COME APART . NOT SURE HOW THIS COULD HAPPEN. ANY IDEAS ON WHERE TO GET A NEW ONE. TOYOTA DOESNT SEEM TO MAKE THEM ANY MORE AND I HAVNT HAD LUCK FINDING ANY AFTER MARKET BRANDS EITHER.
