Thing is that there are some of us that don't have the butterfly, 98-02 didn't have it (in LC at least). Talking with Ben on this, as I am kinda the one that pushed him to make something, the option for the holes was to make them large enough for the Nalgene/36oz Yeti Rambler but also allow for a 4Runner/FJ Cruiser rubber insert that will small items like a standard 12oz soda can.

As for your request for the iPad mount, look up the M2V2 thread I started. One of the guys did the iPad mounted in a Ram XGrip and said it worked great.
No worries. There will be multiple versions.

Actually, my 2000 LC has the butterfly. In fact, there are 3 positions for it, left/center/right. If I move it to the right position, it fits a Nalgene bottle on the left perfectly and still room for something on the right like a 500ml store bought water bottle or a soda can.

Can you take a photo of your Cupholder? I have the butterfly too on my 2000 LC. But there is only one position.

Huh... ok I thought that when I was researching it that it was 98-02 didn't have the butterfly except for the LXs. But maybe I read it wrong.

It does seem like the LC cup holder design is hit or miss. There are a few variations out there for the same model years it seems, which gets confusing. My '99 has no butterfly, just a chunk of removable plastic in the middle.

I am real interested in the total replacement unit with insert for sizing and the ability to use the FJ rubber insert.

I think that some of them have also had later model cupholders retrofitted. My first 99 had the "chunk of removable plastic," while my current 99 has had a later cupholder retrofitted that used the butterfly.

Either way, IMO, BenCC's design will likely be lightyears ahead of what we have now. I, for one, never close mine, and would LOVE To have the space used for the door usable for storage.

Same here. I have a 2002 and it has the 3-position butterfly with rubber wings. We can fit a 32oz Nalgene on one side and a smaller thing on the other. Depth is the bigger concern as with the gear selector in 1, it will interfere with the top of a Nalgene. Also fitting 2x Nalgenes side by side would be fantastic, so the added diameter you are working with is great. I understand not everyone has the same thing in their trucks or their personal wants/needs are the same. I was just giving my $0.02 on what my ideal setup would be - again that is deeper, wider, with one thing that provides adjustability for diameter and not two inserts that have to find a home when not in use. Doesn't mean I'm not still interested in the latter, just personally would prefer the former.

As for the RAM mount, thanks for the explanation and backup justifications for your design. Having seen your work, it doesn't surprise me you took all of those into consideration - you are thorough and detail oriented, I applaud it. My question was more regarding actual in-world use, as the other RAM mount product available says you can use an iPad, but even with their recommended products it vibrates. @gregnash thanks for the hot tip on your thread, I'm reading through it now.

Again, keep up the great work.

Here is a photo of the 3-position butterfly from my 2002. Please ignore the crumbs and mess. We just got back from a trip and haven’t cleaned up yet.

You can see the three marks for location. Maybe 1/4” between each for roughly 1/2” delta between large and small.

Can you do me a favor? Do you have that insert or can you find a part number or link for me? I am going to buy one. Thanks.

I drove from Columbus OH to Detroit and back today, 450 miles, with the cupholder prototype on my truck. No squeaks or rattles whatsoever. And surprisingly the cupholder is cooler to touch. My factory cuphoder was very hot when driving on freeway.

Thanks for your discussions. I read every one of them.

Right picture is what in my mind. Left hole diameter is 98 mm (3.86 in). Right hole diameter is 80 mm (3.15 in). Depth is 70 mm (2.75 in) and slightly less than 70 mm, respectively. Those dimensions are all larger than the factory ones.

The flashlight hole is 25 mm in diameter. It should hold my Surefire G2.

Ben, how does that cup holder depth work with the support bar that is in there? Seems like it would interfere.
The cupholder has mutiple contact areas with the factory structures. In the front, it is bolted to the center console panel. At the bottom, it sits flush with the metal suppurt bar. At left and right, it sits on plastic lips.

LOVE IT!!!! And like the small holder for the thin wallet, phone or whatever next to it!
