I know this has been done alot here but for the lift of me i cannot seem to search the right words to find threads. So lets see some builds you guys have done to convert the barn doors into a gate. i have a set in ok shape im just deciding if its worth to restore and sell them and buy a aqualu tailgate.

what year are your barn doors for? i might be interested in them if they’re in better shape than mine and that might fund your gate

Easy to do. Separate the inside from the outside. Build a ladder frame for the inside using 1" x 1/2" rectangle tube. It makes it much stronger.

With in the first week of owning my 40 I knew I wasn't going to be able to live with the barn doors.
A drop tail gate is so much more useful.
I didn't have many tools in 73 but did have access to a welder so I just welded the two pieces together and moved the hinges around.
It has been working for 43 years now.

There is a post by lelandEOD in 2013 under the heading "poor boy fj40 tailgate" that shows a step by step of his cool tailgate mod.

I cut and pasted an 81ish mini truck tailgate to fit. Used the mini truck hinges, jeep mj (or whatever the little cherokee trucks were called) junk yard limit straps and 2 sets of 40 barn door latches to keep it closed.

Just a FYI the spare tire latches are the same as the tailgate and barn doors. The 75/76 spare tire latches is the opposite and works the correct way on the left side. Not easy to find them but just a heads up if you do see one for sale.

Unsymetrical in the new symetrical lol. Used what i had when i needed it.

I was able to reverse a right latch into a left latch.

@darwink1 that ‘40 of yours has some cool details. I like it.

This is mine, I took Barn doors and welded a frame on the back side. I then made a panel to make it flush. I swapped the licence plate holder to the passenger side. It is very strong.

Bumping this thread as I picked up a set of barn doors for this and I am looking for more ideas...

I have been looking at integrating a Tundra center latch system into the tailgate but unsure if it'll look too out of place.

Also, anything in particular to be looking for in a spot weld cutter for these old 40s? New water for me.

Buy a tailgate, they are like 550$ last time I looked.

Another example.
