Hi all!

I m stuck in Zambia/Southern Africa with a transmission problem. While driving sudden loss of transmission like the truck was in neutral, regardless of shifter position.

Had to get towed to the only gearbox workshop in the country twice. They've had the gearbox out and open three times by now but don't have a clue what causes the problem.

Engine is 2UZ-FE (yes, it's a 100 series), auto gearbox is A442 FA02B (Japan Market) mostly in 80 series.

1. Any ideas what could be the problem?

2. Is the A442 easily interchangeable with the A343 which is more readily available in the country?

Thanks for any help!

Is your truck part time 4wd? Not sure that it would suffer the same stripped drive flange as our full time trucks, but that symptom seems right.

Edit: Sorry, didn’t answer your question. They are not easily interchangeable.

Dont know of any 2UZ engine that had the older transmission from the factory. Going to be tuff getting the ecu to be happy

@inkpot
Yes, the American version got the newer smoother? gearbox from the start, afaik.
I seem to have a rare specimen, or may just one of the very first UZJ100s.

Park holds it.

If park holds solid, that rules out broken drive train, likely a transmission problem.

Many Australian, GCC and European 98-02's had the A442F

343 requires more computer input from ECU?

The 442 uses a separate Control module that in turn communicates with the engine control module. In the case of the 343 the engine control module handles everything. It would be a huge challenge to hybridize.

Thanks all!
The quintessence seems to be they are not interchangeable, at least not without major changes in the engine control module.

I'll start with ordering a refabricated transmission from South Africa.

I would not usually the shifting problems in the 442 is the solenoids, if they didn't see anything wrong than for sure it's the solenoids
