Guys,

After reading all the less than popular reviews about the Painless kit, I was looking at other "cheaper" options. For $500 I'd expect it to be painless, so refuse to pay that much for something that will most likely still be a headache.

I found these 2 kits on eBay and was wondering if anyone had any reviews or thoughts about them?

UNIVERSAL FJ 40 LANDCRUISER WIRING HARNESS: eBay Motors (item 230518690382 end time Sep-04-10 06:35:57 PDT)

or

Wiring Harness Scout II Land Cruiser FJ40 Ford Bronco: eBay Motors (item 270615120346 end time Sep-28-10 00:36:32 PDT)

Any comments aside from "I'd spend $500 on the Painless kit"?

Jonny

I replied to you PM. If you keep your eyes open painless will run a special every now and again. I bought my painless 10101 harness through summit racing for $350 w/ a 100 mail in rebate. Ended up costing me $250 all said and done. I prefered the painless over the ez wiring. better instructions which for me was a big plus since i had never wired a vehicle before. sold the ez wiring one and dont regret doing it.

I have used the Painless kit to rewire my truck - takes longer than you think

none of the kits are designed specifically for cruisers but are more or less generic wiring harnesses, and there will be some modifications you will need to do....

that said, with a good wiring diagram and a multimeter, you can make it work with the OEM switches.....

Looks like the Painless rebates ended April 30, 2010... Sucks.

So does anyone have any feedback about the harness from JT Outfitters?

Jonny

I went with the American Autowire highway 15, about $350.00. Not icluding weatherpack connectors, terminals, tools and loom. Kit is very nice. They also make a 22 circuit model. Does take a while.

I used a basic US made all black universal wiring harness in my '63 with all stock controls, took about a week of evenings to remove the stock harness, take the controls out and clean them, check continuity of the controls, and then install the new harness. Works perfect and the wire quality was as good as the painless harness I have sitting in the garage for my '69.

I just got done wiring my 40 with the EZ 12-circuit wiring harness. Best $140 I've spent to give me piece of mind about the my electronics. I picked up mine from eBay. I installed the wire in split plastic conduit and then heat-shrinked all the connections to give it a factory look.

The wires are well marked and quality appears to be good. I installed a GM tilt steering column therefore it made the installation plug and play with regard to ignition, turn signals and hazard lights. I captured some notes on my wiring so I need to post them out here for the benefit of others.

For a stock installation it's a bit more involved with regard to tracking and understanding wires but still nothing impossible with the use of the vehicles schematics and a basic understanding of wiring.

After using the EZ wiring kit, I can't see why people would spend the added money for Painless. I think you leave lots of money on the table for essentially the same product.

I used the 21 circuit kit from ez-wire on my rig. I found it to be a good kit overall with quality wire and plenty of it. Having seen a painless kit and the ez kit side by side I would say the quality of each is comparable. However, if you desire good comprehensive directions and support the ez-wire kit is not for you. I will also say that if I were to do it again I would use the 12 circuit kit from ez wire and use aux fuse blocks for my TBI stuff and other auxillary needs under the hood.

what year rig are you re-wiring? any other accesseries?

i have 2 ...2f oem harness from fuse block to headlights, even have the oem fuse links on it, unmolested. will posted later on the for sale page, just in case

Thank you everyone for your responses thus far - they are greatly appreciated.

It is a 1970 rig with a 2F motor installed (not sure if that makes a difference.)

Only aftermarket power requirements are for a couple of gauges that were added - Autometer - Fuel, Ammeter, Oil Pressure and Temp. Not sure why the factory ones on the gauge cluster were no longer utilized.

I purchased the one from JT Outfitters. It is built by kwik wire in wisconsin. good harness, but like the rest it is universal. The only hard part was getting the stock switches to work with it. I'm still working on mine and have everything but hazards. it has a cutoff switch built in to cut the power to the coil/ignition.

Would you consider this to be the same, or easier/harder than the EZ wiring kit (if you have any experience with the EZ kit)? Thank you,

Jonny

all of the aftermarket harnesses require the same modifications to make the OEM switches work

you have to recreate the Toyota wiring scheme for the hazard, blinker and brake lights

Is this a hard thing to do?
Ill be looking for a harness in the coming months and am NOT a electronics guy AT ALL! Ill be wanting whatever will be the easiest to install even if I have to pay a bit more for it.
Someone mentioned a chevy column? Does that make life MUCH easier as far as the wiring is concerned?
Are the hazzards, blinkers and brakes the hardest ones to wire?

Thanks,

Great thread for me to be reading!

Well, I'm on a slight time crunch so need to decide which of the 2 harnesses to purchase. Anyone want to throw out their opinion:

EZ-Wiring - $185

or

Kwik Wire (JT Outfitters) - $217

Thanks,
Jonny
