I love Mud. Thanks guys. This is a big help. One point of clarification still needed tho - C-dan?

I've been working very long hours lately so haven't spent a tremendous amount of time on the Pig, but have made some slight progress here and there. The front fenders are now both off, and I'm starting to take engine components off. I have a question about the fenders as I begin to pursue cleaning them up and sandblasting them. Later pigs look as if the fenders were bolted together whereas these look as if they're tack welded. should I leave these welds alone or pull them completely apart to be blasted and then weld them back together?

Cruiser-Dan, He is the parts guru at American toyota. I don't know his number, but if you search you will find it.

Got it!

It's been far too long since I've posted. Weather's been too s***ty for working outside, so I've been focusing on indoor projects. Wife and I are now expecting a baby, too, which certainly adds to the "honey do" list. But, speaking of babies, I haven't been a complete slouch, and have been making baby step progress on the 55. The fenders pictured above are now being separated and sandblasted. I've been getting a lot of emblems back from a local chromer. Here's a pretty cool example of one. Now before it's too late and this gets mounted on the wagon, is the interior of the "4" supposed to be black or orange? I've been getting mixed feedback on this. Experts please weigh in.

I was wondering what happened to your build, never mind. Congratulations to you and your wife! Life is first, then the cruiser. I look forward to your return.

Aw, thanks guys! I see all these pics on Mud with Dads and their kids either going on adventures or just wrenching on their cruisers together - and admittedly I was getting a little envious. Call it keeping up with the Jones', or just passing time while it's cold out - either way, I'm excited to be bringing a new legacy of cruiser lover into the world. We're due in July. Until then, as long as the sun is shining and the chores are done - hopefully I'll be at it on the wagon. Keep up the encouragement!

Pablo-

It's actually in pieces and not painted yet. Colors currently under consideration are white and grey / white and orange.

Might look overdone if orange (emblem) and orange, but then again might look really dark with black (emblem) and grey. I dunno. I'll stress over it for months. ;-)

Steven,

In regards to your fenders I would highly recommend leaving the welds alone and keeping the assembly intact. I just made to mistake of pulling one apart & spent the better part of a day wrestling it back into alignment. For the other fender I am going to "rake" the old seam filler out and flood the gap w/ POR-15.

Congrats on the pending arrival and your commitment to a multiple-generational Cruiser family. The first car I ever drove was m Uncle's 40 and my son is about to ge his license and use our 55 as a DD.

oh boy. you know, despite all the great pics of FJ55s you can find by doing a quick google search, a very low percentage of them (like 0.0000009%) show the ass end. People are very proud of their vehicles and will take pictures of the front fenders, hood, tires, roof racks, and all that - but it's very rare to find a pic of a good rear emblem. since we're on the topic of rear emblems and have had some PM inquiries, i thought i'd post a few pics up of the differences in mounting locations between older and "newer" models. pics in this post will be of "early", and next post will be of "late" models. i know of 2 distinct locations based on my "quick" research. if you know of more configurations, by all means, do post and share. i assume the mounting location shown as the early model on the lower left side would be correct for a 71/72 model. my next question would be, do i also mount the "toyota" emblem on the tailgate as well - or is that not a 71/72 model year thing - or was it ever?? all of the pics i can find only show the 4 wheel drive emblem. gracias!

late model 4 wheel drive emblem location

here's where i've seen the later model emblems mounted. i assume both of these configurations are factory correct. are there more?

Uh oh. The sand blaster probably already has it apart - although I haven't heard back from ACC on it yet. Could be that they're having trouble? I'll have to put a call out to Michael and Brian and see what's going on.

If they're apart already, I'll just consider it too late and if nothing else, it gives me the opportunity to seal every square inch of it with POR. If they're still together - the good news is that it'll go back on the wagon that much easier.

Thanks for the reminder. I'll post when I get news back from ACC.

I do like that orange! Seeing this makes me wonder if the color was a late model oem thing, or a custom thing. Since I'm on the fence again about overall vehicle color scheme, I guess the jury is still out on what I'm going to do with the emblem.

If I do either color and seal it with a good clear coat, I guess I have less opportunity for fading - but touch up would be fairly easy. Makes the decision that much more difficult.

Thanks for sharing the pic.

I dug through my pictures from that build....did not find one of it before, but it was originally orange, no black underneath, and had been on the truck since the mid eighties. When we sandblasted the body, there were no mystery holes, so location should be correct for a 78.
I had already taken the emblems off when I thought to snap some before pics. This one is from day one, I think...

And a little better shot of the finished....does look sharp in orange....with the blue....but, I am a Denver Broncos fan :p
