Back on the road again.

Let's recap the shenanigans.

At some point when I was putting the case back together I inadvertently installed the rear output shaft bearing on bass ackwards, which led to the rear drum locking up tight when I tightened the nut down.

Upon checking the FSM I found my problem pretty quick, but the fact that I had a gear on the inside of the case and a bearing pressed on from the outside of the case presented an interesting problem.

An old weathered block of oak and a 4lb sledge made quick work of taking it apart.

The damage was done though, when I installed the drum it must have pressed the cage on the bearing, and the Cpt. Caveman bearing removal technique didn't do it any favors either.


A phone call to Cruiser Outfitters and I had a new bearing on the way......

While I had some free time I lathered some POR 15 on the spots that I was concerned about in the wheel wells.

While I had the interior pulled apart I figured I would address the leaking rear heater core.


Sleazy money, I had a spare, 10 minutes later I'm back to cold beer and wax.


Until the next day when I noticed that the replacement leaked worse than the first one!

Nothing that can't be fixed.

Couple gallons of Sta-Lube and it's time to rock and roll.

Turned the key over and nothing happened, not even a click. Strange, I had it on a trickle charger for a few weeks.

Broke out the meter and found 5.9 volts DC.

I guess it's time to replace the 10 year old AGM battery that was probably pulled from another rig at some point.


Damn, batteries cost a fortune nowadays.

In all fairness to the trickle charger, it did have a light flashing that signaled "replace battery".

After a few trips out and about I have noticed a small thud when I push in the clutch, but only when shifting while moving, up or down. If I push the clutch twice it doesn't happen on the second stroke. Guess I'll be pulling the inspection cover this evening to check the TO bearing.

The high pitched whine that I used to have is completely gone now, the transmission transfer case combo is crazy quiet compared to before I rebuilt it, crazy difference. Maybe it's the new oil, maybe it's new 90wt at -7f this morning.

Thanks to @ZooTownCruiser for coming over one evening with cold beer to help stab the transmission!

Have a “Repair” function on my newest charger that has saved 4 batteries so far. More than paid for itself.

I put a super old battery on repair and it took about 6 days and finally turned green. Topped up the water and it has been working great ever since.

It was a good time for that battery to give up the ghost, I had noticed a few months ago it seemed like it was a little sluggish when cranking the engine, even with the gear reduction starter. The date on the side of the battery was 10/15.

Seems like a fair run. The last 2 AGM batteries I put in my truck only lasted 4 years. I was reading up on the cold weather durability of AGM batteries, unfortunately like everything else, there is so much sales pitches and he said she said type of talk about them it's hard to come up with something conclusive.
