This one belonged to my buddy Patrick.

He sold it to his buddy Brian who owns the Delta Beast that I keep maintained for him.

Last summer he told me his gas tank was leaking and could I fix it then he was going to sell it.

Nice truck as far as Pigs go. Mosley added a Sniper and Vintage AC to it a few years back. It’s got power steering.

I put it in line for when I had a couple days between projects then started hunting for a fuel tank.

So I bought a tank for it (spent way too much) and had it shipped to me, only to find it was full of crusty old gas

This is the piles of s*** that came out of the tank with me dropping it on the ground for 2 hours

Luckily I have a great local radiator shop that boiled this turd out for me and it’s good as new

So today I worked on my 70 to fix all the stuff I messed up at Windrock and decided to pull this thing in and knock out the tank tomorrow.

Check this s*** out.

The tank is not leaking from rust like I was expecting

It’s crushed. Imploded maybe? I’ve never seen anything like it.

What in the world could have caused this?

Yeah bad vent/charcoal canister I guess, that’s bad.

Don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like that.
Be interested to see what it looks like after you pull it.
Me either. I can’t imagine a gas cap or a fuel like found not go first

IF, the Cruiser was sitting somewhere at a higher, cooler elevation, and was transported down to a warmer low elevation, AND all of the lines were plugged AND the gas cap was completely sealed, it could maybe create enough of a vacuum to cave in.
That’s my best far-fetched hypothesis.

I’ve seen it a couple of times on MB diesel powered cars. The tank vent would get clogged and the tank would oil can like that. Would create enough vacuum to kill the engine. Customer would wait a while and it would run again.

I just can’t imagine that the system would be sealed enough to cause that kind of vacuum.
I don't think so either. Are you sure it's not from a major impact? Like the rear tire slipped off a boulder and it high centered on the tank? There is no uniformity to it and I don't think vacuum would cause the tank to rip like that. Would like to see more photos with the tank out.

None of the POs ever got under there unless you go way way back to the guy who built the truck. I’ll reach out to him and see if he knows anything

To go with your line of thinking, the spare tire is in the back cargo area and there is no crossmember. I like it.

As for atmospheric change it came from Atlanta to here.

Damn a 🐷

I’ve had this fuel tank here for a month and just now checked the pickup and return.

F’ing pickup tube is jammed solid.

I’m going to pull the old tank and cut it open and see what I’m up against.

Likely going to have to cut my “new” tank open too.

🐷👎

That 90* on the pickup line is keeping me from getting something in that line to see if it’s just an obstruction

I cut the bad tank

I need to decide to either drop and I tank pump in this thing or cut open the “new” tank and rework the pickup with some fuel friendly rubber hose

what about going with an aluminum tank? i bought two cheap tanks on Amazon 140 each drilled i think 6 holes in the what would become the center wall to create a baffle. welded them together then added a filler neck to the side in the correct spot and built a simple hanger bracket to go in original frame holes. I am running a tbi 350 but you could plug the return line inlet. i think all said and done under $500 for 34 gallon tank. not saying its the best route but it beats the 2k for the off the shelf long range tank. i dropped my tank to many times to try and fix leaks in it and then the pickup line plugged and i was done.
