Great advise here! I bought a hose kit but still needed to hit up O'riellys for a generic one that I cut up. There should be pics of that.

@red66toy has the part's catalog linked in his signature. Download the PDF and start scrolling. It's the 1965 one but will work for you. Toyota purged their parts catalogs pre-1969 but still stocks many parts if you can look up the number. They are often superceded but that's the fun of working on an early rig!

The heater hoses run through the firewall to an aftermarket heater, which I haven’t identified. It works though.

Do you have the early parts catalog? I use the ones listed in @red66toy's signature.

Do you have the original early water pump with the long coolant pipe? The water pump block gasket is NLA but I think @red66toy is looking to repro them. The plate gasket is the same on the both early and late versions. Available from Mr T.

The hose clamps are still available from Mr T. All sizes. They do not match the early design 100% but they look the part as they are still the banded style with a phillips head versus a slotted head.

Lets see what else.... thermostat is still available from Mr T. Do you have the high hat top thermostat housing or the shorty? Short gasket is still available. High hat is NLA but you can cross reference the part number and get one from a early forklift. Or just make one.

Early hoses are NLA but there are kits out there that mix the OEM with aftermarket to make it work.

Pull your block drain.

FIPG all day. Permatex if I was in a hurry but if you have the time, just get a tube from Mr T.

Question….where are you finding the hose kits?

Also, does anyone know of a good replacement for the metal union pipe that is vertical coming off the water pump going down to the radiator? Mine is super nasty looking.

Don’t count the pipe out yet. Take it off, look inside and at the hose junction area. If it’s very corroded then definitely replace with a new used one. But it could be just fine and use a coat of paint.

Take your upper 90 bend hose to your local Napa and they can match it up to a hose with the same bend. Then cut to fit. I’ll see if I still have the part number

Ah, makes sense with that straight pipe all of the hoses are straight cuts except the upper hose. That will save some $$!!

Your coolant pipe looks great honestly. Just clean it up and paint it. Don't lose it - you be sorry. They come up for sale every once in a while but not often; could just be a demand thing and there's a million laying around since these were phased out early and the "next gen" was used for decades. Who knows. The ones that I've seen come up are in the same condition as yours or worse.

The one shown is the later model one - mid 67-ish I think is when it changed. You have the rare early water pump to go with the long coolant pipe. To convert to the later pipe you'll need a water pump, a different hose kit, and modify your alternator bracket or get a later model one (which you might have already; you have the straight bracket, the early one had a bend). The early lower thermostat housing barely clears the later pump; usually at some point the tall hat thermostat housing is replaced with the later model version that goes with all of the later model stuff I mentioned above.

I went through this process but in reverse, i.e. I went back to the early stuff. I'm not sure if you looked at my build thread but there's pics in there if needed.

Still trying to find the correct water pump. City Racer said the later one would work but I’d need to replace the pipe with the later one. Are there block offs for that pipe? I found one on JT Outfitters, but heard a lot of horror stories dealing with them.

It also looks based on what I can find that the thermostat housing hose should be going into the water pump and the heater hose should come off the union pipe…since mine has an aftermarket heater looks like there is some re-routing that was done previously?? Now I’m confused. lol.

Block off for what pipe exactly? The little elbow on that union? I don’t have a heater in my truck right now and just put a coolant compatible rubber cap with a clamp over the side fitting on my union pipe if that helps at all in your question.

Well in mine I have the straight Union pipe with no outlet/elbow….but I have an aftermarket heater and you can see the coolant lines going from the thermostat housing to the firewall and another going to the water pump…so making a circle, but I don’t tho k that is how it is connected with factory heaters?

Factory went to the union pipe fitting and a fitting on the back drivers side of the head. I used to have a aftermarket heater as well. Let me get a pic of how it was routed. Definitely not factory but it worked.

Yeah I was wondering if I could re-route to the back of the drivers side but wasn’t sure what part to get or which ‘bolt’ it replaced. If that was the case I should be able to use the City Racer recommendation.

Ok so the pic above. @rainingagain do you have the parts you used in that pic of the ‘t’ and the other part. Do you have pics of where that heater hose is going? Would be helpful to see the lower radiator hose as well. I think I’m catching on now. This would be running less hoses under the hood…or at least running the proper way.
