1964 FJ40 with 1F. Toyota has 25% off right now so if I’d like to go ahead and order the radiator (16400-49356) as I have a slight coolant leak somewhere.

I may as well do the water pump, thermostat, and hoses/clamps while I’m doing it. Does Toyota still sell these parts? I’ve seen them on the different LC vendor sites.

What gaskets night I need while knocking this out?

When I did my '69, I swapped out the metal fan for a safer, plastic 6 blade. New belt. I replaced the thermostat and housing, as the bolts were corroded. New gaskets for pump, housing and thermostat. Fipg for waterpump gasket. Added an overflow as the new radiator could accommodate one. Added new brass drain valve to radiator as the new one just had a cheesy plastic plug. New block drain plug. All new hoses, all new clamps. New heater lines and heater shut off valve. Might as well while it's drained. I rebuilt my rear heater too. Might take out your cores and clean, flush, pressure check.

Do you have the Toyota part numbers by chance? Probably will have to order the radiator from Toyota and the rest from other vendors.

Did you use Toyota FIPG or go Permatex or something like that?

I will caution you to be patient. I just ordered new hoses and radiator from toyota.
Radiator and hoses took almost two weeks
One hose never came in and I cancelled the order.
Clamps came in just fine.

I'd call your local dealer and check to make sure parts are readily available. They should be able to see inventory and where it is. I didn't do that and it was frustrating.

I'd replace your belt & waterpump while it's easy.

Cruiser Outfitters can likely send you what you need with no wait time other than shipping.

Ok first off you gotta pay the tax - we need pics!!!!

Do you have the early parts catalog? I use the ones listed in @red66toy's signature.

Do you have the original early water pump with the long coolant pipe? The water pump block gasket is NLA but I think @red66toy is looking to repro them. The plate gasket is the same on the both early and late versions. Available from Mr T.

The hose clamps are still available from Mr T. All sizes. They do not match the early design 100% but they look the part as they are still the banded style with a phillips head versus a slotted head.

Lets see what else.... thermostat is still available from Mr T. Do you have the high hat top thermostat housing or the shorty? Short gasket is still available. High hat is NLA but you can cross reference the part number and get one from a early forklift. Or just make one.

Early hoses are NLA but there are kits out there that mix the OEM with aftermarket to make it work.

Pull your block drain.

FIPG all day. Permatex if I was in a hurry but if you have the time, just get a tube from Mr T.

I found your build thread. BRB...

Original water pumps are pretty hard to find. If yours isn't leaking and working well I would just leave it alone for now. Replacing them on the early F engines is very easy to do with the radiator and thermostat housing in place. I have done it like 7 times in the past few weeks. hahaha. So if it fails after you replace all the other parts, its really not a big deal.
@andybudge makes a repro early thermostat housing if you need one.
But like @rainingagain pointed out, hoses and clamps are easy to get. Go with OEM clamps if you can, nice quality.
CityRacer and Mark (@65swb45 ) sell a metal spacer for the pump so you can run a plastic fan. I have a setup from Mark and its been working great for well over a decade.

Thanks for the info! I’m not having temp problems, but I think my water pump might be leaking as I can see coolant below it sometimes…normally only on hot days. The FJ40 stays at 150-160 and might go to 180 when first turned off. I think I’m just going to replace the water pump while I’m at it.

The issue I’m running into is finding the specific Toyota part numbers that will work on my ‘64. The Toyota sites don’t go back that far and I haven’t found any definite answers on the parts I’d need for my year (which would be the same as your ‘65 in theory).

For the large hoses, I took them to NAPA auto parts and they found suitable hoses I could use. I cut them to the right length. I didn't have the luxury of trying to find and waiting for OEM when I was replacing the hoses at that particular time. They have been just fine.

If you need a new pump gasket (at the block or between the pump backing plate and pump). I can help you out with that. Or you can cut yourself if you like a little craft project. :) If it is a OEM pump, you can rebuild yourself actually! @hdjtachtig found a rebuild kit for a old jeep that works perfectly.

Nice, you have most of the OG setup. Where do your heater hoses route?

I took a bunch of pictures including part numbers in my build thread starting here: PNW 67 Patina Blue - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/pnw-67-patina-blue.1289865/page-4#post-14699293

I didn't write them down but you should be able to pull what you need from the posts from that point onward.

Great advise here! I bought a hose kit but still needed to hit up O'riellys for a generic one that I cut up. There should be pics of that.

@red66toy has the part's catalog linked in his signature. Download the PDF and start scrolling. It's the 1965 one but will work for you. Toyota purged their parts catalogs pre-1969 but still stocks many parts if you can look up the number. They are often superceded but that's the fun of working on a early rig!
