So here's where I'm curious as to what happened. Did I have the e-brake on too tight after install and then trying to drive with the e-brake engaged caused the housing to break? Or did the housing break and then the loose parts and pieces and/or broken cable make it seem like my e-brake was out of adjustment?

I'm leaning toward the housing having broke prematurely because I have noticed a leaking rear seal for a little while but never took the time to inspect it where it might have been coming from.

Next question is going to be for George @orangefj45 at Valley hybrids if I can get another Speedo housing. I'll hit you up after your back to work overt he long weekend.

My guess would be your backing plate bolts came loose allowing the parking brake shoes to bind up in the drum and then snapped the bolt hole in the housing. Your on the right path for repair get the dual seal housing from Valley Hybrids.

🤔

We can talk when I get back to the shop.

I’m a lot distracted at the moment. But I will say that I’m little disappointed that I am routinely overlooked as a resource for the dual seal speedometer housings.

Honestly I didn't even know you had these. I guess I just figured George had them because that's where I got the transmission/tcase resealed/rebuilt. I'll give you a call this week and discuss if you have some time.

I made some progress today removing the brake assembly, e-brake cable, and the speedo housing.
Ran into a stopping point when I realized I didn't have a new gasket nor could I reuse the old gasket.
Do you think I can just make my own gasket? Should I just use some fipg? I was figuring I should just wait until I can get one so that it won't start leaking.

The e-brake cable was a real PITA to replace but I eventually got it. Here's a couple pictures if you're planning on doing this yourself. There's a little tab on the top holding the cable down in place, that gave me more fits than I care to say. But eventually I showed it who's boss.

I have a bunch of gaskets. Which ones do you need? I’m going to post office this morning and can send to you for free.

Also, the purple wire that’s in you ebrake cable post is for Vintage Air right?

Try your local parts store for the gasket. I was told they have them.

Thanks for looking anyway for the gasket.
Yeah I believe so that purple wire is for the vintage air.

I’ll try to remember to call you tomorrow about this.

So I didn't find this at local parts stores, but I did find the part # I think(Part Number: 3615260020), and I was going to check the local dealership for this. Doesn't cost much at all but I'll have to check with them in the morning. I think I just didn't know what it was called to search but I think I got it, but for reference, it has it listed as OUTPUT SHAFT BEARING RETAINER GASKET.

@65swb45 if there's something more to this I'll look for your call tomorrow. Thanks

👍🏻

Thanks again Mark for the housing. I've installed it and am just about ready to move the fj40 again after refilling tcase with gear oil. The old one is now back on it's way to you.
