Loved the Peabody in my long-ago only stay. Also wandered across the street for not one but two plates of expense account ribs at the Rendezvous. Visited Elvis the next day before flying out.
If you make the detour, say hi to the hotel ducks. My disbelief when my co-worker who grew up near Memphis mentioned the quackers and their routine was what prompted a side trip on our way home from DC. Good thing I had an understanding boss when a fellow employee and I told him we were making a slight detour on our westward return trips to Denver and LA. "Those ribs are going to cost me $600 a plate," he said, having spent an earlier part of his career nearby in Mississippi. He was just about right. all in, including the Lincoln town car rental ,hotel stay, Graceland admission and adjusted Delta tickets. Those were the days.

The Peabody is always great. The ducks are fun to watch but the people watching is above and beyond....at least if you sit in the lobby bar long enough. Rendezvous Ribs are never bad either. I spoke to the manager today and they have a self park lot that will accommodate my 20' trailer. Next road trip queued up!

Pulled the transmission today. Forgive my non-OSHA approved rigging. I couldn't find a shackle that would work on the lift. Need to buy some lifting eyes for the lift. I have no idea how I would get a lot of this done without a lift. I have a Walker, long arm, 4 Ton jack but it wouldn't touch the transmission with the tires on dollies. Guess that's why they make transmission jacks.

Got in touch with Georg. Probably going to send the transmission and transfer case his way. The transmission is fine except for the internal seal and, of course, the transfer case is leaking out the back. He will check the transmission, redo the seals (with the double seals on the rear output), and probably rebuild the transfer case. It hasn't given me any issues but apparently the transfer cases wear much faster than the transmissions and I only want to do this once.

I don't have the special SST for removing the transmission shift lever but found an easy solution. Take any 3/4" socket that's bigger than an 1" or so, slide it down to the bottom, press down and turn clockwise. It was very easy. Socket needs to be 3/4" drive to go over the bend in the shift lever........at least it needed to be on mine.

Take any 3/4" socket that's bigger than an 1" or so, slide it down to the bottom, press down and turn clockwise. It was very easy. Socket needs to be 3/4" drive to go over the bend in the shift lever........at least it needed to be on mine.
I never tried that with a socket, always used two screwdrivers pushing down and turning. I'll try the socket trick next time.
 
A ratchet strap can be used to hold the back of the engine up to take off the bellhousing and clutch. If that doesn’t work, a floor jack and a short 4x4 block of wood work too.
After a discussion with Cameron, the bell housing is going; so the whole deal is going on a crib on a pallet.

Don't forget I have a lift. If I had to remove the bell housing, I would just suspend everything and unbolt it.

I have the SST, but about half the time pushing down with your thumbs and rotating it is all it takes
 
Just a question and maybe it was somewhere in your thread but if your this far why not go with power steering? Do a mini truck box where existing steering is so you not cutting or notching frame for Saginaw. Super simple swap. Use a 60 series or 80 series pump and res with mini truck box and jtoutfitter makes the bracket to replace with shock tower. I only have power steering on a few of my rigs but way nicer for my wife to drive around. Or are you trying to keep this one as stock as possible?

I appreciate the sentiment but the manual steering has never bothered me on this one, I want to keep it as stock as possible, and my wife would never drive it. Not that she won't drive an old 4WD; she has an '85 4Runner that she occasionally tools around in but we have too many other choices for her to drive the pig - alone.
 
Yeah get it was just a thought I don’t mind my Armstrong steering. Other than in my 67 f250 parking lots suck.
 
Was a lot worse on my 80 mini truck with no power steering, steering wheel was half the size of the 1 in Lancruiser đŸ˜‰
The '85 4Runner has power steering. Actually everything else we have has power steering for that matter, even the FJ45 Troopy.
 
Pulled the engine this afternoon. Only took a few minutes once I concluded that my lift wouldn't raise the engine high enough for the oil pan to clear the frame. 2" suspension lift and all 4 tires on dollies makes it a bit too tall. Should have just started with the tractor.

i used just dashes out of LA, i dropped it off, they told me they would contact me with price when they were ready to start, they called about 4 months later, about $900 shipped at the time, came out great
When did you get this dash done Don? They just quoted me $1500 to $1650, just for the dash. Not sure if that includes return shipping.
 
If I wanted to remove the internals in my front and rear differential housings, I assume it's more complicated than just unbolting the flange nut and pulling everything out the back? I have removed and replaced thirds several times but I have never tried to remove the guts from the housing. Just wondering how involved this could get.

Hard to tell, for example, if the slinger and bearing that is circled will move with the shaft or are they pressed into the housing and onto the shaft? Please forgive my ignorance. Just not something I have dove into before. Also, it's not a must do; more a nice to have.

Bag of worms if you're planning on doing a ring and pinion. If you're just removing the pumpkin, then pull the axle shafts ( front and rear are different ), unbolt the driveshafts and out it comes. They are heavy. I would do some reading in the manuals beforehand. There is a bit of work just getting to the point of pulling the axle shafts out.

I have pulled axles and thirds before; cumbersome but fairly straightforward. No plans to do anything with the gears and I would send the thirds off if I was going to change anything.

However, I thought I might change that output seal on the third and also thought it might be easier to prep and paint (or powder coat) the housing if all the internals were out. Left my manual with the body shop but I'm sure there's one online here.
