Destroyed yet another one of these "low profile" drain plugs in the rear. It was completely loose when I saw it, luckily I didn't lose it on the way home. That would have sucked. The lip is completely shaved off. One of these days when the axle is torn apart I will plug the hole and add a large inspection plug up front.

I've never been able to find any sort of diff armor for the full float 9.5" FJ80 rear axle. Today I stumbled upon this page. $75 for lower skid and bash plate. SOLD! Weird name for a business, Moto Farkles.

Anyway, thought some of you may be interested.

yikes that lower bolt is going to be a barrel of laughs if you ever have to open up the diff

edit: well I take that back seeing that you have it off in the second pic. I'll go back to work now.

2nd pic isn't mine, it's from the website. But yeah it will be fun next time I have to remove the third.

im surprised that stud is still there.. i had a rock break one off .. worst case just cut it off and replace the stud

Thinking of removing the 3 lower studs and replacing with some allen head bolts because I don't see these lasting much longer.

Use button heads. They're already rounded!

Have done a lot of things over the years. Including welding up the drain hole and removing fasteners to drain, found that to be a pain, slow. Don't see that kit being thick enough to help? Now we mostly just apply sacrificial metal from the mig gun to the rings, part of the maintenance of a wheeler.

These are effective:

Adding 1/2" metal, takes a lot of rubbing on rock to wear it away. This is not a done pic, put more metal in the ring area.

Adding another ring around the old one, works well, have done this on the truck many times. Again not done, the inner area was built up and "ramps" added front and rear.

This one is done, hard to see how tall it is in a pic.

Nice work! I did notice the skid is too thin to completely cover the drain plug so I was planning an adding a bit more material around it. That way the drain plug will be fully recessed.

Be careful welding that much on the housing, they are easy to warp. Weld a bit allow to cool, go again, have seen many of them turned into bananas from jobs like that. If you're planning to do it with the axle apart, best to bolt/properly torque a diff housing in, prevents/reduces the likelihood of the flange warping. Have seen a few of these, if the diff doesn't sit flat, it leaks, but more importantly, doesn't stay tight.

"Welcome to Moto Farkles. We've glad to have you." Reads like a Chinese google translator.

That’s what I was looking for...I just could not find it on google

UPDATE

Got the armor installed. Also realized this is made by MUD member @roma042987

Turns out this isn't made for the 80 series 9.5" axle. Took a lot of massaging, cutting, hammering, bending to make it fit. Our housings are shaped a bit differently apparently and have a bigger truss on the axle tube. Results weren't ideal but at least it's better than having nothing at all

I did something similar on Foo with 3/8 plate. bent it on the homebuilt brake on the shop press.

3/8 plate sounds crazy thick;however, it ended up about flush with the ring around the drain plug.

pic is of the front axle; however, did the same on the rear on other rig.

What the Foo is this???

Good stuff. Probably should have done that but I would have lost my mind trying to cut and bend 3/8" with nothing but a grinder and hammer. I have a similar plate on front (made by Ballistic Fab) and agree that 3/8" covers the drain plug perfectly. You can kinda see it in this pic:

You might source what is known as AR plate ( abrasion resistant ) to start with. You find it used in the leading edge of buckets, blades and scoops on backhoes, dozers and graders. It's quite hard and will quickly destroy iron worker punches

That's what they use for rifle targets right? Don't think I've seen it sold locally.

Can you weld AR plate? Let me reword that. Can weekend warriors weld that?
