Can you weld AR plate? Let me reword that. Can weekend warriors weld that?
It welds ok but good luck doing anything to it with machine tools

I actually don't personally make the plates, John and I designed them and since he has a fab shop he made the first ones for my 40 and 60. I gave him the housing to make them up and thought it would be a good product for the land cruiser crowd. Previously I used the ones sold for 8'' housings (trail gear I think) and they fit horribly and at 5/8 thick are a bit too much to massage.
His website motofarkles was originally for motorcycle parts but he does all sorts of fab work from motorcycle to 4x4 to govt stuff.

They are a nice set of plates and definitely better than trying to make 8" armor fit. Just wanted folks to know this isn't a perfect fit on the FJ80 9.5" housing as there are small differences in the shape

Looks good Jose!

Did you ever get any pics of that one fellow's pinion armor setup?
I forget who, IIRC @beno knew who I'm talking about.
Seems like that thread was awhile ago, enough that something may have changed.

Or my early onset senility strikes again.

No, but I do remember hearing about this mystery pinion guard. Nobody wanted to talk about it because it was supposedly top secret and didn't wanna get sued for copyright and patent infringement :meh:

AR400 welds well will low hydrogen rod like a 7018 if you're doing stick. Some people have luck with MIG, standard er70 wire for MIG. It depends on the welding machine you use.
If you have a pocket welder ( under 180 amps ) you're hard pressed to do over 1/4". preheating to 300 deg or so is best. Slow air cooling
afterwards. Propane torch is fine to preheat. AR likes a clean surface. Get rid of paint, oil and rust.

@roma042987 ... was searching around for diff armor today and wanted to see if you guys have dialed in the fit any better for the 9.5" diff?

How about an 80 series?
i haven't installed them on an 80 series. Reading the first page of this thread says it doesn't fit as well. I do see the additional truss on the bottom so the bottom plate would need to be cut shorter by the looks of it....again I have installed on an 80 so cant comment

This will not fit an 80 series 9.5" rear axle without lots of modification. Hit up Stellarbuilt's shop in the Sacramento area. He has versions that fit the 80 axle perfectly.

If you want a quick, down and dirty way to prevent abrasion wear, just run a grid of hardfacing weld beads on the high wear areas using Stoody 31 or 35 electrodes. It works on excavator buckets, so it will prevent a little rock rash.

Ballistic Fab has fj80 9.5 diff armor.

That looks pretty nice. I love how all these companies come out with nice solutions after I defiled my axle housing.

That does look pretty good. I might have to snag one of those. Jose, did you make your own pieces to truss your front axle or were you able to find truss parts from someone for the 80 front axle. The truss is one of my next things on my list of mods.

The top truss came from Low Range and was designed for the mini truck axles. It fit pretty good after some massaging with the grinder. The front truss is actually a big piece of angle iron booty-fab'd to fit. The front diff armor and lower skid plate were from Ballistic, also meant for the mini truck axles which means it took a bit of adjustment.

Add a bit of heat and you get a poor man's Diamond housing:
