Evening experts,

40 series guy here going to look at, maybe buy, and then drive home… my first 60 series tomorrow. A 1988 FJ62.

Biggest question I have right now is in regards to the EFI on these and types of fuel; Sounds like he’s been driving it daily and feeding it “regular” pump gas, presumably 87 octane ethanol. Should I just stick w/ that, at least for drive home? I’d ideally love to run some 91 non ethanol through it (yes it’s available where I live) Good idea/bad idea? What about 91 ethanol? Additionally, how about running some Sea Foam through a tank or two (be it 87 or 91)?

Total newbie to the 3F and its EFI. Considerable drive to get it home and I’m wanting my best chance at success and obviously not wanting to harm anything or create problems enroute.

Open to ANY and all other thoughts/concerns here. Fuel related or otherwise.

Also completely foreign to my 40 brain is the automatic transmission in these. Any intel/concerns there? (Other than their costly rebuild) What is a happy “highway speed” for them? Is 60-70 MPH asking too much? Thank you all in advance for the education as always.

Fuel wise you will be fine running 87 or 91. Seafoam if you want but it's not likely to make any improvements, you're dumping one quart of Seafoam into 20 plus gallons of fuel. The Seafoam will be rather dilute in that mixture.

If it's stock, and running well, 70+ mph will be no problem.

Drive it home and learn it. Working on a 3FE will be almost like working on a 2F, intake is more complicated and there are more hoses and lines.

Change the fluids, check valves, check timing, give it a tune up if needed.

When the A440F dies do a H55F swap.

@Godwin Thank you sir! Just didn’t want to “confuse” the EFI if it’s been running on 87 corn for most of its recent years, and if throwing a bag of 91 non ethanol at it would cause any issues. Thanks again!!!

The 3FE is almost as stupid as a 2F, and the EFI is very simple. Just gas it up and drive it, changing octane will not throw any codes. Just like a 2F timing set too high and octane too low you will get pinging, but no codes.

regular pump gas is just fine for a 62 in MT, that is all I run
what 62 series for sale are you looking at?

Enjoy the drive! You will get a lot of honks and thumbs up going cross country! I just did this with my 1988 FJ62 running mid grade.
