I have an 82 that I picked up last year. I’ve noticed recently that the passenger side rear drum does not lock when I set the parking brake but it does when I actually apply the brake pedal.

I’ve never worked on brakes before so I’m at a disadvantage but after reading some I have a couple of questions.

1. Reading in the forums people I get the impression that my adjustment gear is different. Mine goes up or down. Which direction loosens and which tightens?

2. In reading it appears I can use the two predrilled holes on the drum to push it off. Does anyone know what size bolt and thread I need?

3. By the looks of this rotor it appears to me that the person who last touched it didn’t install correctly. I’m concerned that if I do use the bolts to remove the drum I may damage something behind it.

Thanks in advance!

Give the round parting seam a decent WD40 squirt and beat the snot out of it from the side with a BFH. Go all the way around it and eventually it'll come loose.

The bolts work better than a hammer, don't remember the size but it's the easiest way especially if the drum is stuck. Be sure to back off the shoes first.

I doubt you have an internal problem, things look ok from what I see in the pics. I don’t remember how but I bet all you need to do is adjust the parking brake cable. Also can’t remember which direction to tighten the shoe, but shouldn’t be hard to tell by counting the clicks and see what happens.

Thanks. The cable pulls tight. Drivers side works but passenger side does not.

M8 bolts. Plus WD40 and hammer.

Trade out the wd40 for some penetrating oil and a little flame heat may need to be applied.

81 and newer rear brakes are self adjusting. I believe the parking brake mechanism adjusts the brakes. Pull the drum off and inspect the parking brake mechanism. Also make sure your parking brake cable and lever are ok. Also, all Toyota rear drum brakes since 1981 are subject to the bell crank mechanisms freezing. That would be the first place I looked.

My bet is the bell crank is frozen. Look in the 60 section for more details.
