81 BJ42 - I have to bring it home and pass inspection

I want one of those bumpers. Looks beefy and well built. I'd want to add some rad/fender protection for deer and elk, but that is a great base!

How about I just buy your truck as I am loving everything you are doing and you do so much better of a job than I could ever do. I almost want to come and do an apprenticeship with you!

3/16" would be a fair bit easier to bend tooling wise. You really think 1/4" is too much? Steel.

I made my last one from 24" of 3x5x1/4 wall tube with 3/16 wings on the ends similar to this one.

Your frame is only slightly heavier than 1/8" (3.5mm?) and is only sporadically boxed. I'd rather replace a bumper than a frame. Your design is a good one in that it will keep the frame rails parallel if you bang something off-center. There isn't much on a 40 to do that and small hit often means a parallelogram for a frame. I think 3/16 will still be too strong but that's what I'd use.

I wish my 70 series bumper was 1/3 lighter in every respect.

you can always remove a leaf, drive, twist, soften, reinstall if need be.
i wish i could do mock-ups like that, the old pencil and paper and grey matter is all i can work with. if you have any links to free programs to play with ... well ... that would be nice.

Hello Wayne,

Visio is a good choice as well. Older versions not integrated into MS Office are available on eBay for cheap. Poor Man's AutoCAD, as I like to call it.

Give it a try.

So changing tack, I decided to put the new emblem in the grill. Easiest way was to flip the bib.

The Diesel emblem had one missing post and the second one broke quite easily when I tried to remove the clip. Figured I'd clean and paint it. Just gotta figure out how to re-attach it.

I had previously decided not to fix the rust in the bib right now but rather to save it for another day. But I just can't let it slide after seeing this.

My owners manual for my '82 shows a pull up radiator screen. Does yours have one? I've never seen one before.

Oh yeah, it was there. Thats why I flipped the bib. Couldn't get my hands around it to the emblem. It is fully functional but quite corroded and I am trying to figure what to do about it. Its in pieces now but I'll get some pics along the way.

I too approve of your bumper Kevin.

Very simple. And simple sits well with me.

Of course, those who know Dan know that his definition of 'simple' and Rube Goldberg's definition are very similar. Funnily enough, Dan also set out not to do a frame off on his 79 fj 40.... And then simply made it the nicest bj 42 turbo on the planet.

Ha! That is why Dan's going to help me with my *not-a-frame-off* on my truck! Kevin, I will be *not* ordering a lot of parts from you soon!

I don't know if it's still available, but a few years back I did some design work using Alibre Design. It's like Solidworks but I think it was cheaper

Simple is the result, not the process. You don't get to be a pilgrim without walking a bit, but you still get to live the simple life of a pilgrim.

If you get down next weekend, you'll finally get to see the 40, BTW. I mean, the engine will be missing, but you'll get to see it at least.

Classic.

And true. I'm a sucker for wrenching.

Sorry to hijack, but what's the latest on the 40 Dan?

I'm hoping Kevin will indulge us...

The engine is out and at the machine shop. Interestingly enough, the cylinder that had failed is what caused the failure. But when the engine came apart, the machine shop found that one of the main bearing caps was split in two. But that wouldn't have caused any of the issues it was having, just good to catch.

Here's hoping it can be back up by spring (shouldn't be too hard).

Hijack over. Back to Kevin doing awesome stuff.

Out. And you'll have better airflow to the radiator.

Too few. You still have room on the left vertical side.

This will be fantastic. You can use it to tan during those long Alberta winters.
