Just picked up a 1995 FZJ80 with 93,300 miles.

It has no mods. The last owner had it since 1996 for his wife and brought it to Florida when they retired 20 years ago.

My immediate plans are mostly mechanical. Fluids, hoses, and leaks.

Fluids:

My coolant is new but orange so I will be flushing that and replacing with the correct red. The power steering fluid is not dexron III and will get changed. The transmission, brake fluid, diff, and transfer case needs new fluid. I'd like to run with distilled water and a bottle of toyota coolant flush to really clean things out for a bit of time.

Hoses:

Although the upper radiator hose and a few heater hoses were changed, everything else is hard or looks really rough. I will change these after the flush. I am going to put in an OEM radiator, thermostat, and replace the overflow bottle while it is all full of water.

Leaks:

I have sludge built up under the transmission. Nothing fresh or thin enough to determine it is red. Not sure what is leaking there yet. There is also some fresh oil on some component near the oil filter. Honestly, things are pretty grimy underneath but rust does not seem to be a problem right now. I really hate to change a bunch of hoses and then ruin them with leaking fluids.

Nothing actually leaked on the driveway before/after the test drive and the car was cold when I arrived early that morning. I am going to run some UV dye in the oil and do a coolant pressure test. I guess you can do UV dye in the transmission too but I am not sure.

So, I have got to figure out how to avoid attempting to do everything all at once just because the radiator is getting pulled. I know I want to tear it all apart but it's not necessary and will cause the truck to be down for too long. The plan is to not going beyond 2 weekends of down time.

And the battery has some red stains on it. Not sure what that is since the power steering fluid is not red. The trans dip stick seems secure. Maybe there's battery cleaner that was sprayed on but I've never seen anything that leaves a stain.

That's my story for now.

Bill

The initial fill is not dexron III, that's just for topping off. It's good to change it of course, but multiple original owners and techs have reported that the initial fill on these trucks is hydraulic oil (aka power steering fluid). So really it just means that it hasn't been changed before, or that he actually looked at the fluid and saw that it was PS fluid and not ATFIII and stuck with it.

The red grease is for battery terminals to prevent corrosion/acid crystals growing on it. You can get it at the parts store in little packets, the stuff worked wonders for my parent's RV battery so we use it on everything now.

Ah, did not know that on the PS fluid. I never understood what was so special about Toyota PS pumps that warranted using ATF.

Good to know about the anti-corrosion grease. Sure beats breaking out the baking soda and brush.

Thanks

Project rebuild. Meticulously taken care of, single family owned. I think it was passed along, modded and then wrecked. The chassis looks so good, I cannot tell if it was recently painted/coated or if the truck had just been so well maintained.

This is my foray into Land Cruisers which has been a lifelong dream.

I’ve heard great things about their stuff. It is excellent so far, and a lot of the t-nuts from my Prinsu I have on my taco work with it which is awesome.

Side note question for other folks out there, should I be worried about cooling? It has a new radiator but I have read some stuff out there regarding putting a bigger/more powerful fan and fan clutch in to help cool down this hot, tight engine bay. Any tips? Just want the piece of mind…

On the Bowfin, I've talked with Pat the owner of the company several times and he's sent me new items to Beta test on the rack. I've met him in person several times also at Solid Axle Summit in Ouray, CO. Just saw him a month ago first week of August. Awesome guy. On the motor, I've never understood how a truck with such low compression could run so hot. I've seen lots of vented hoods. Some people also put a supplemental fan in front of the radiator. just do a thread search on 80 series engine cooling.
