I have a 71 FJ40 which has the inside herculined. I was wondering if anyone has redone/patched the liner? Can I just apply over the top of the existing or will this not work?

Also, the LC had lived it's entire life in AZ and had no rust, but when I bought it this past year and moved it to the Galveston / Houston area, rust has sprung up everywhere. It makes me want to cry. Anyway, it is a primerish white color now, which does not bother me, but I figure the best way to deal with the rust is to paint. Should I do this myself (I have never done this before) or have a local shop do it? I have read a little about it and the supplies to paint shouldn't be too expensive, just time consuming (which I don't have a lot of). Does anyone know a shop in the area that would do a basic paint job for cheap?

I just ordered por-15 and zero rust for the underside/frame, or should I have a shop do this part as well?

A side note, I tore up my transfer case a few months ago am just now getting around to fixing it. If you are looking for a 15 spline/29 tooth input gear for a Dana 18 mated w/ a th400 w/ a advance adapters kit, you will not find one just laying around. It took me a while, but I finally located one and it is on it's way. Once I have it moving again, I will tackle the rust problem.

In the near future I will be doing a disc brake conversion for my tired drums that keep pulling and locking up. I will have lots of questions, till then....

Thanks

Use the search section and the tech section as these will answer many of your questions and problems. Good luck and have fun. Rust does suck but it is a part of owning an LC.

on your herculiner question, I am sure if you scuffed it and repainted it would work. They also have a product that is like a UV top coat that may just do the trick for you, as it will refinish the color of the durabak. I would contact them directly with your questions.

your question on paints/rust is way too vague, if you want some opinions I would suggest posting pics of the trouble areas, zerorust is going to be an easier paint to work with with less steps than the por 15, but both are good products, prep is important.

FYI, lots of info in the FAQ section for disc brake conversion, so read away.....

As far as the herculiner, I am not exactly worried about the color of it (although it could use a little revamping), it is more about the areas where the liner has been scraped off and bare metal is showing. I was wondering if I could just touch up those areas with herculiner and it would adhere to the existing, or should/could I re-line the entire inside directly over the top of the existing herculiner.

As for the paint, I have about decided to do it myself at my house. Unless someone knows someone in the galveston/houston area that would do it really cheap. Or..... unless someone can tell me some horror stories that would make me change my mind, i.e. how it will look really crappy or how I will get half way through and realize that I don't have the stuff I need to finish, etc.

I painted the whole exterior of my Pig with Herculiner. When I get some rockrash, I just paint over it with more Herculiner. Bonds and patches very well.
Why not just paint your rig with Herculiner? Cheap & easy.

As Pig says, just touch up the places where it has been scraped off if you don't want to do an entire re-coat. Follow the directions for prep that come with the Herculiner including scuffing with a scotchbrite pad or fine sand paper and wiping down with *I forget the solvent name - maybe toluene* that's available at paint/hardware stores. The normal list for the gallon kit is about $100 (also available by the qt for about $35) but if you keep your eyes out at Menard's or Blain's Farm and Fleet, you'll see it on sale for $79 or even $69 and with a $20 factory rebate which puts it at $50 for the gallon kit. I've bought it twice this way.

I wouldn't waste my time looking for a paint shop to do a "cheap" repaint. If you do find one, that's exactly what you'll get, a cheap paint job. To treat the rust right with Zero Rust or POR-15 either one will not be cheap to pay someone to do it so I recommend doing it yourself.

Good luck,
Pete

You need to get that nice (at one time rust free) rig away from that :eek:NaCl H2O  in the background of your picture that will help your situation:hillbilly:

Where I live, it is never REALLY away from salt water. There is a constant ocean mist down here. It's close proximity to it in those pictures was just a photo-op. :D

Just bought painting supplies today and am about to make a paint room in my garage. Where should I buy auto paint to spray out of my gun?

Also, has anyone used Duplicolor bed liner. It is much cheaper than herculiner. Thought I might coat over it with that.

I will be painting mine in my garage next week. I'm in Friendswood. I have never painted before but for my rig it will do fine.

The prep for Herculiner is called Xylol. Helps reopen the set Herculiner to except the new. I've used the Duplicolor from a rattle can and though not a fair comparison, the Herculiner was a lot better. Unfortunatlly for you that salt will continuouslly expose every weak spot in your paint

What kind of paint are you using (prep, primer and final)? Please post pics of your progress and give me any advice you can give for painting, things that made it easier or things you would change, etc. I will be doing it as soon as mine will roll, so I can move it out of my garage to wash it. Am doing as much prep as I can now.

Did you take your tub off of frame to paint the frame and underside, or did you do it intact, because I am doing that first with tub on the frame. From the pictures it looks like you are painting with the hood, windshield and front section on. I was thinking of taking them off, but I guess it may not be necessary.

I drive my 40 daily so I chose the route that would have the least downtime. Basic dissassembly only. Interior is black rinolined so I just got a bunch of 1mil plastic sheeting for most of the interior. This is not a show rig but am aiming for a good 5 foot paint job.

All my paint supplies came from Johnson's Paint Supply off of College St. in South Houston. Very reasonable and knowledgeable. Anyway if you are not doing anything on Sunday you can come up and learn what not to do on yours. Possibly 3 others will come to watch the horror as well. PM'd ya with contact info.

I probably can't make it tomorrow. Are you going to do it all tomorrow, or will you being working on it any the rest of this week? If something changes, I will give you a ring tomorrow. Good luck.
