3 spd xfer with 4 speed

I don't blame you, to be honest I would of went that route if time wasn't pressing for me to finish. The PTO is very cool, I was somewhat happy that I found an 8274--next best thing anyway.

the 3 speed case has slightly lower gearing too so that is also an advantage---but for me Betty has got to make the boat in July!

-----And I keep buying stuff!

Today I started the 2f!

Sorry but no pics yet I have been working to get the 2f started and am posting just to mark that date! After I got it cranked it was time to push her our and do a much needed garage clean up!

https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/247150-hei-no-spark-ignitor-hook-up.html

Here is my link to the ignition questions I had, actually turned out to be quite easy. I made a jumper with two female spade terminals and connected the two wires to each other.

I also had to wire up a similar connector for the carb solenoid. This was just switched 12 volts and a ground. You should be able to hear it click when you put power to it.

So having got to that point I decided to fire her up for the first time. I just ran it for a couple of seconds but it started right up and ran!

WOO HOO!:bounce2::bounce::clap:

It's exciting firing her up for the first time since the 2F install. The last time I cranked the FJ was when I drove it into my garage for the build last year.

Talk about a motivator!

So carb and dizzy are going off to Jim C, I just wanted to be sure it would at least start before doing anything else.

I used a marine hand pump on a rubber hose to run fuel to the carb and that worked good I could see the carb fill up as I squeezed the bulb.

Now I have to sort out fuel tank plumbing, the gas pedal linkage, speedo cable, and emer brake, driveshafts to suit the 2f/4 speed,
bleed the brakes, install the seats and soft top and 1000 other little things.

But today she ran!!!

Merry Christmas Cooler and family!

test fit

Well after a lot of fiddly probs I needed a morale boost so I put the top on for a test fit. Now that that seems okay I can paint the bows and go for the final install on them.

After much hassle with seat mounts I never did get the right ones so I went for the easy yest expensive way out and bought the BTB mount.

looking back I probably should of bought another welder and could have saved some bucks!

anyway got the new bumper on, put on my rear stainless brake line and pulled the glass out of my windshield to prep for paint and a new seal

next job is the oil pan gasket change

my carb and dizzy have gone to Jim C for desmog and rebuild so in the meantime I will be sorting out the water pump issues/fan/ and alternator.

I have gone to a RH alternator mount and need to mod the fan shroud but that is on hold till I get my new clutch fan and dual pulley set up. I may need to move the rad forward.

also sorting the accel linkage but put that on hold awaiting the carb to make sure everything works together properly

Man the top looks good--cant wait till I am at that point for the final install!

looks great smith,,i never read all about the paki tops, but how much in $ and i know that the bows are hard to find and expensive..but looks nice on your 40,,make me think for the next year savings...

ESHU, I think the top was around 1k.

Mine Top is going back in the bag too until I get everything messy done--washed my hands with Aqua-Clean before touching it today!

Cant afford anything happening to it, but I wanted to at least do a fit check before painting the bows

Well,

I tried the MAF disc brake thinking it would solve the 4 speed/crossmember clearance issue--it didnt

but I ordered new shoes and parts to do the old drum and it is back in now with a new cable and working. Not a bad job to do and it is nice to complete something without waiting for more parts etc.

so all done just have to put the rear motor mounts back in.

Its pretty self explanatory but heres a few pics. If you are doing your brake remember to at least get a new cable clip and the retainers for the brake pin, the retainer goes behind the springs on top and holds the washer in

also on the levers for the brake mechanism there are clips

When I took my drum off I found the brake linings laying in the bottom of the drum and the shoes still installed probably would have made some weird noises till I figured it out!

brake lines

This is one of the brake lines from the set I got, BF Goodrich, DOT approved and a nice kit --came with all the necessary clips etc. Has a nice good quality feel

The axle looks awful with all the gunk since I painted them last summer but no time for niceties! It'll all get cleaned up and a touch up when I put it on the road. The bare spot I'll have to touch up ---brake fluid did that not long after I painted it

Anyway I am pressing on with all the little jobs waiting for my carb and dizzy to get back from Jim C

I still need to sort out driveshafts, fan belts, a little more work on the shroud, paint the soft top bows and on and on

Was a nice boost to complete the parking brake!

The new trans meant more trimming on the tunnel cover so I will have to make a little cover plate and get a shift boot over top that

pressing on trying to get stuff done until the carb gets back, got some seals to change, a new oil pan seal and a few other small things to do

bled the clutch today and checked to make sure it released! I am glad it did should of done that before putting in the seats and tunnel cover!

carb and dizzy back

Just got the carb and dizzy back from Jim C.

But I need a new distrib cap as my old one broke in shipping since it was the entire number 1 post that broke out it did leave a nice hole to verify timing:)

I am just wondering now about the vacuum ports I have 2 on the dizzy and two on my carb but jim put a rubber cap on one of the carb ports I am thinking this is an advance and retard dizzy and I may need to leave one of the dizzy ports open but I am not sure on that so I am doing some reading up.

In one post Jim said the 78s and 79s and up were different so still searching

In any case I am hoping to get it running Mon when I get my new dizzy cap

I have been paranoid about seating the dizzy so I took it out to make sure the oil pump slot moved with the rotor and it did but I wanted to be sure.

I pulled the filter and cranked it and got a nice flow into the filter but when I pulled the sending unit out I didnt get any under pressure out of there?

I stuck a gage on so I can check it when I crank it cause I am assuming that the reason for no pressure at the sender is cause it is still filling the filter which all drains out as soon as you stop cranking.

I think it will be good once the motor is idling but here are some picks of the dizzy install anyway it looks like it is up a bit but the clamping marks seem to indicate it is back where previously installed

any thoughts?

The green on the bows was an experiment ---dont like it so going back to plan A with the white

Anyway more pics once she is running and maybe a vid if I can get it to work
