4wd indicator for fj40 early transfer case

As it turns out early switches are discontinued and expensive. It seems likely to me that there is an existing fitting that will serve as an adapter. The t case hole for the switch is 8mm. Does anyone know the size and or thread pitch on the late switches? It will require a spacer but should work.

I need a new switch as well for my 3 speed case. @cruiseroutfit do you know if any of the current switches, or reproduction ones from the heritage program will fit the bill? :)

This one looks the most promising. But I have no idea on the thread sizing. Pic posted here

Trying to chase down…ya know…pretty much everything. Light doesn’t work when my 4WD is engaged on my ‘64. Followed the vacuum hoses to the TC…found the switch. No wires are connected, but I did find the 2 wires as they were taped up in the original switch boot. However, this switch looks toasted. Anyone figured out a switch that will work? This is a ‘64, but has a 4 speed transmission…not sure if that matters.

Or maybe I just need to properly connect the wires? Anyone have a picture of how they connect? One to the middle part and another to the inside casing of the switch?

I did try to see if the detent ball is inside the switch housing…but my magnet would not go down in the hole.

Might try posting an ad in the classified section. I believe that SOR sells the detent ball.

Any idea if that switch looks normal? I wonder how the wires hook to it…maybe it works…lol.

The switch might be repairable. They aren’t that complicated. You may just need to solder some wire leads to the contacts. The other ends of the pigtails have bullet connectors that plug into the wire harness.

Got it, I just need to figure out how the wires connect to the switch. I found another thread and looks like the detent ball from a 60 will work.

Last question…if I need a new switch…since I have a 4 speed would I need one specific to a 4 speed? My 64 original was 3 speed.

If my memory serves me the circuit works with a ground wire. When in 4WD the detect ball pushes the switch closed thus completing the ground to the dash light which has a switched 12v. I may stand corrected however 🙄

You are correct. Super basic switch. Just completes a circuit for ground.

Any idea how/what those two wires connect? The only pics I can find has the boot covering the end.
The two posts on the back are scalloped so the wires sit inside the depression and you solder them on. Just get a good soldering iron and you can put on new wires. Easy job. :)

Thanks. I’ve got a good soldering iron…work on vintage electronics..well did. I’m just having a hard time picturing how these solder to the switch. Looks like there is only one middle contact point.

Also, a later switch does screw into the 3 speed transfer case but it’s too long. So when you screw it in, the switch is always activated. A spacer would be needed or something.

I touched the wires together and the green light came on so all that is good. I think the detention ball is in there as well. I don’t have a magnet that would fit in there but tried to get a pic. Looks round?
