So nobody is going to post a pic of this magical switch? :D

What is it you want to see, Marc?

when it gets above freezing here i will look think the 1 from my 73 is still there.also in some toyota sales brochures i think it was listed as an option or maybey it was in the owners manual .been a while but am looking

I see. This thread is so slo-mo that I forgot what we were talking about.

My FSM doesn't hint at it existing, and SOR seems unaware as well....

Maybe you were supposed to be smart enough to tell from the lever position.

Anyone know where I can get this switch. Not sure if it’s working. My vacuum works but no power to switch.
Did you check to see if it's a bad solder on the wires at the switch. Mine initially didn't work but a re-solder did the trick.

I did. I checked power where it terminates at the switch. The wires are a little frayed but on solid. I may pull the switch and test.

So, if I recall correctly: When diagnosing the 4WD light/switch function, you may try removing the wire leads going to the switch at the T. case. Make a jumper and connect the 2 leads. The dash light should illuminate when the key is on. If it doesn't, the problem is upstream of the T.case., perhaps at the dash light. You can also perform the test by removing the switch and simply pushing the button while someone else monitors the light.

If I remember that switch does not have power to it. The switch is on the - neg side and switchs the ground wire.

So pulled the switch and resolders the frayed terminal. The shorter wire should run to dash light (which I’m missing) and the other I’m guessing ground (white wire/black stripe). I tried testing while in vehicle using test light and got nothing. I tried a few different test while out on the bench. If no power runs to switch I assume some must go to light bulb to complete a circuit of some sorry when vacuum switch is depressed. I tested that theory and still nothing. Another have info on wiring to trigger switch?

Nevermind I think I answered my question. The bulb at dash must have power and the surround is the ground.
Now you got it 👍 The switch will only show continuity or not. You should have continuity now as when the ball drops into the detent on shaft and when you push on plunger as when the ball slides out of the detent in shaft and pushes the plunger up you should not have continuity.

Switch works outside the transfercase. I’ll put it back in and see if I get same results. If not I may be missing the detent ball. I’ve never had light in the dash so I’ll wire up something temporary.

Yes yes! Thanks for the help. We will see if it works in the transfercase!

Before re-installing the switch: If you have a small magnet on a telescoping stick, you may want to use it to make sure that there is a detent ball inside the switch housing. The detent ball is steel so it will come out with a magnet.

Thanks to all who posted here. I put the switch back in transfercase and used my light probe as a make shift dash light and it worked when pulling the FD to engage 4wd. Haven’t been on mud in awhile and forget how great this community is! 👍🏼

Does anyone know if this switch will work in a 73 40 series. 72-80 seem to be skipped on the chart. I don’t have a switch or light so I’m not sure if the 73s didn’t get them or if it is a PO delete. I’d like to add it either way.

If you have a mechanical shifter not a vacuum switch you did not have a switch or a light on the dash for 4WD.

I suspected that to be the case. The PO of this poor 40 was more of the cut the wires and see if the part falls off type. When the TC didn’t have a switch but did have the right size plug in it’s place I figured it never came with one. From the posts in this thread it looks like the early switch will work.
