Not a promising start to hard top removal. Probably going to go ahead and replace this.

How could this level of rust happened inside the hardtop rail?! My only guess is the PO left the top off sitting outside (for a couple of decades).

Wow, PO had to make an effort to get that rust on a CA rig. Nice 40 you have there and, go Gigantes!

A few hours at the office on a Sunday; not ideal. However, it is an excuse for 1/2 hour of open air driving in California weather, and that sure does take the edge off after a long night with the little fella ... who decided 5am was the right time to wake up and start cooing today. This is my 3rd 40 and this marks something like 10 years since I've been able to enjoy the open air experience ... MAN ... one of the most enjoyable motoring experiences out there, IMO.

Good for you—a nice ride and respite for sure!! I am still at the office :frown: proving the saying that the practice of law is a jealous mistress

Nope, that's standard. Rainwater seeps to the inside of the rail past the sealant on the outer fiberglass edge and rivets and sits on that inside rail.

Still find it surprising ... this cruiser was in wine country ... it rarely rains. Evidence suggests the hard top was rarely on, so I'm thinking it was left outside somewhere, exposed full time to the elements. Still need to do my forum research, but I'm hopeful the fiberglass part is salvageable and a repro metal rail can be found. Longer term item though ... I think I'll go full time soft top until/unless I ever leave California.

Unpacked the after-market console today that came with the truck. Here is a partial visual inventory of treasures. I really want to dial up ‘Candy’ ... was the toothbrush, extra floss and hotel key card from a visit??

Johnny Cash CD and cassette definitely validate the PO/OO as a solid dude in my books.

Dusting off this thread a bit ...

Does anyone know how to take apart the OEM seat slider / channel assembly? I’ve ground off all of the rivets but the two part slider won’t come apart - its kind of like there’s some sort of a bump stop or inner retaining clip preventing me from separating the inner and outer pieces.

I’ve attached a picture to illustrate.

(and done all of this with likely too much blind faith that I can find replacement rivets and remember how this goes back together!!)

Does anyone know of an aftermarket seat slider set that fits factory seats?

I’ve found these - but haven’t heard back from the company yet. Sounds like they are the bracket used with Corbeau seats. Toyota Landcruiser FJ40 9/73-78 Seat Brackets

In trying to disassemble my factory sliders I think I’ve learned (the hard way) that they really were to meant to be disassembled and once disassembled a nightmare to reassemble (due to the number of rivets and bump stops that need to be drilled out to get the channels separated)

I tried to reassemble mine on a 60 I had, same idea. PO had put a weld on them to keep them from moving, so he could attach aftermarket seats.... nightmare... I ended up finding a set on the classifieds section. I put up a wanted add. that's the best I can do ya for.. feel your pain brother.

So true - getting away for 1 hour increments, at best. Wife not happy if she needs me and I’m coming from the garage!

Small world - I saw that same logo for my first 26 years. Grew up in Saskatoon and area. Family still all there.

funny you guys should mention this as i was going to ask the same thing... -40C canadian winter and a wheat sheaf avatar. must be from saskatchewan. i’m in saskatoon myself. yours wasn’t the beautiful orange 40 in north saskatoon by chance was it?

Mine was forest green with a black top - same logic as the white top for hot climates, anything attracting some heat was good in my books.

Amazed to this day - the truck literally never failed to start through bitterly cold winters, often without the block heater on.

So much time invested .. so frustrating!

Took a ton of photos along the way with the dash pad install. I haven’t seen much coverage of the fj40dash product, so I’ll try and write that up (tiny contribution to all of the rich forum content that’s helped me).

Pics to come - I finished the seats (CruiserCorps covers, seat frame refinish), also installed the floor mat from @Racer65 (who is proving to be much too close for my pocketbook), and some odds and ends (new knobs for shifters).

Next up - roll bar reinstall.

Installed the Fold N Tumble. Now waiting for seatbelts so I can get the little guys car seat in.

Gear reduction starter install was as easy as advertised, except the difficulty in getting a socket on the two nuts - open ended wrench did the trick.
