I imagine that big wheels and tires mus wreak havoc on rod ends too. Is it possible to get heavy duty ones ?
80 Series tie rod ends and pretty strong ! I run 39s on mine and run some of the toughest trails in the western US. IMO there on par with Dana 60 stuff.
I have been running the stock Tie rod as well 😆

The locking diffs from the 80 series are now installed on the 4 door 45. We also yanked out the T- case from and proceeded to install the Northwest fab input shaft that we had previously installed in the other case..... I'm glad that we did because I found out that the seal that goes between the Black box and the transfer case was not properly seated😮.....
That would have caused oil migration from the doubler to the transfer case among other expensive issues i'd have been mad as hell to have to tackle.
We replaced all the axle seals and bearings. Rebuilt the knuckles. Installed new wheel studs to replace some broken ones . That 80 series truly was a God send....... by the time that rear panel shows up , a lot of work will be out of the way. I still have to install new e-brake shoes..... I think i remember buying cross drilled and vented rotors and stainless flexible tubes for this thing , but they seem to have gotten misplaced during the move from the old shop. We'll keep looking for them.

The swing out carrier project is neering completion. The last one I built for my fj40 had bearings. Came out working perfectly....
Carries a 35" tire and seems to have no problem supporting the weight.
For this one, I went without the bearings. I'm turning a pair of bronze bushes that I will install on the carrier's mount.
I modified the shaft so tha a grease fitting can be installed .
We'll see how we'll that works....
I'll post pics as we go along.
The gangsters in the area are not happy these days.... I'm hearing that they had a shootout with the cops 👮‍♂️ and their leader caught a few rounds in the wrong places....☠️
I would not normally celebrate someone's demise but these parasites have made things really difficult for me and everyone else . He'll be better where they sent him.
His buddies were so mad about him traveling to the next world that they shot at cars passing in the area.
I happened to be leaving the shop after working on the truck that day and sure enough, they shot at me too !!!
Hearing bullets wheezing by is an unsettling feeling. Needless to say that I was lucky that they missed every shot .
Hopefully things will quiet down enough for us to go back Monday.

Are your steering rods OEM as well ?
Drag link ( steering box to axle )is after market HD only after it got bent.
Tie rod (wheel to wheel ) behind the axle very protected is OEM.

I am glad to see this project keeps going when I check in. You have had more challenges than than probably most of the rest of us. Keep grinding! Nice work!

Today was a great day ! We got a lot done. I took pictures of some of the work we got done last week but did not have time to post.

The 80 series I'm using as a donor had been imported from Japan. It was a right hand drive that had been converted to left hand drive here. You guys need to see kind of mods that these people did and what i had to do to get rid of it😡.
The panhard bar mounting bracket was welded on the differential on the driver side. I have seen grotesque work before, but this beats it all 🤮 ..... check it out.

You can fit a locking diff in a none locking axle housing.
Just get the locking diff gasket and use it as a template to add a few threaded hole for studs and make a few notch’s
It’s been done before.
Might be a better option if your existing housing is in better shape.
There’s also a few options for standalone wiring harnesses to make those lockers work
Or you could build your own.
The factory wiring set up is a little complicated and has its own computer located and the passenger side front kick panel on a left-hand drive model not sure if it’s the same for a right hand drive.
If you go with the factory set up, it will only allow you to lock the rear first and then the front.
If you use a standalone harness, you can get the lockers to work independently. A nice option in my opinion.

Great info ! Thanks . I considered it when I saw that the bracket was on the wrong side. When I counted the bolts and saw that the locking diff has more, I thought it would not fit and since the bracket was "welded" (if we can call it that) on the left side, I cut off the one from the old housing and installed it on the right side. We then proceeded to cut off that nightmare you saw in post # 729. We also welded the wheel turn stop back in place.
After quite a bit of work and lots of cussing , we were happy to have been able to get it off.

The donor 80 series is pretty complete. I'd be surprised if that computer was not where you said.
At this point of the build, I need easy things ..... you say that the locking diff harness can be complicated. I don't want complications. I'd appreciate it a great deal if you could tell me where to buy every everything needed to make those lockers work. Thanks again ,@Broski !!

Had a chance to work on this project again yesterday. Made some more progress on the spare carrier. Then bronze bushings are fitted in and I drilled the bolt I'm using as spindle shaft to allow grease to be pushed in when needed. Hope it all works out as planned.

Diffs are back in place. The new t- case seems to be part time 4 wheel drive contrary to the last one I had . I guess that's ok too.
I ordered the harnesses for the electric diff lockers . I hope these come faster than that rear panel. Still waiting for this thing to show up......

Today , Christmas came early. The freight forwarder called to inform me that I had a pretty heavy wooden crate to pick up 🥳🥳👏👏👏👏.
I rushed up there and sure enough, it was my upper rear cab panel and a pair of brand new ambulance doors for my FJ 40. The rear panel feltl ight as hell but seems very well made.
I should have purchased it 2 years ago , but that's fine .... I learned. My panel beaters are good craftsmen but sometimes if you can afford to simply purchase something, just do. The time, money and aggravation are absolutely not worth it.
The parts got here without a scratch.
