Is the "Denso 210-0177" the correct 90-amp alternator for the FJ80? I picked one up at Amazon for $35 and from what I have read, almost all FJ80's have an 80 amp unit and the 90 amp can be made to fit with minor case grinding. I suspect that the negative reviews are just people that have the 80-amp bracket and are not aware there was a difference.

I was wondering the same thing saw this pop up as well. There is a Toyota part number for a 90 amp for the 3FE there is also a separate part number for the 90 amp bracket here they are.

If it has an external fan then it's correct, otherwise it's not correct for your 1992 80.

It's more complicated than that:

3fe 90 amp alternator?

3FE 90 Amp upgrade, round 1 failed

Apparently the 90 amp was a special cold-climate option that never came to the US. Supposedly grinding the housing of the alternator will allow it to fit.

For $35 I am willing to give it a shot.

Should look like this, note the external fan. Why reinvent the wheel?

Yes, I am aware of that style as it's what I have now. But there's an internal-fan one that is 90 amps and was optional. It's also dirt cheap on Amazon right now.

Pretty sure folks have gone down this rabbit hole before without results.

I think @bhmmapping pulled it off, but worst case I have a $35 conversation piece for my coffee table.

If you get it to work you should post it up so everyone can see it?

That is the plan! Then all of our 90-amp dreams will come true.

Before you post it up in here make sure to message me first so I can order one!

That looks like a pain in the ass.

I can't find the part number, the receipt from toyota of Dallas just says 90 amp alternator. For $35 it is definitely worth a try though. IIRC it only took a few minutes and was super easy to do. Just don't go crazy with the grinder and tape up all of the vents.

That looks like a pain in the ass.
A spare motor mount helps in that particular situation.
Modifying the mounting ear on the 90 amp isn't technically hard, but you have to make sure the contact faces on both the mounting ears sit flush against the mount or you can crack the modified ear as the earlier posts indicate.

"Going crazy with the grinder" is kinda my MO but I will try to restrain myself.

Sadly, the show's over for $35 alternators:

Whoa, I guess they realized their mistake? Left off a digit?

To be clear, all US spec 1991 FJ80s had an 80 amp alternator with an external fan. This carried over into many 1992 US spec FJ80s, but at some point the US spec changed to a 90 amp unit with an internal fan. The mounts are different between the 2 units so this is not a direct bolt in "upgrade". Personally, I never had the need or desire to go down this road, but that's me.

One issue, if you only want to use OEM/DENSO parts, is the standard 3FE 80amp alternator is discontinued I believe. Only the 90 amp survives.
