i searched, i have looked thru a few picture threads and still came up kind of clueless so hoping someone can help me out here. thanks in advance.

i have been debating 35" or 37" tires recently, need to decide fairly soon so i know if i need 8" or 10" wide rims. but my only problem i can think of with going to 37's is hacking up the rear of the 40 to much. i wanna keep a stock look and still be able to tuck the tires. don't mind a little trimming i just don't want the whole rear quarter chopped up. so if any one has a SOA'd 40 with 37's or bigger could you post a pic and tell me how much you chopped out of the rear fenders?

What width 35 or 37 inch tire are you going to go with?

That is what will determine how wide the wheel will need to be.

:meh:

Right or wrong here is what I did....

I used a piece of cardboard to trace my factory curves:
rear cut1.webp

I then placed a piece of 2" tape across the top and a 3/4" up the front and then used my cardboard jig to retrace the factory curves:

Then I chopped and hacked away! :D

By doing so though I had flipped my rear springs knowing that I may have been a bit of a sissy on my cut and I was right I need to move my rearend forward an inch to center up

This was my aproach at 37's with a stock-ish look on the fenders ?????????

38"

I just trimmed a bit similiar to how Station Wagon did and the flares cover the edge nicely.. My tires are 38/12.5 and with the lift I have they come close but tuck themselves back in there nicely with no problems.. It was very close to not even needing any trimming.. Here is a pic

35/12.5 would use a 8" wide wheel
37/13.5 would need a 10" wide wheel

I disagree , If a tire is only 13.5" wide it would be fine on an 8" wide wheel . A wider wheel will only make the bead more susceptible to coming off the rim . There is more sidewall pressure exerted with a thinner wheel . Bear in mind that's only to an extent . Also this is based only on my experience with certain tire and wheel types .

4x4 station wagon, i remember seeing your post somewhere a while back on how you did your cuts, it came out really good and i was planning on doing mine the same way you did yours

Bigred, what wheel backspacing do you have?

tootall, i think a 8" wide wheel with 13.5" wide tires would cause them to wear in the center to much. i know that i could run it, but tire wear probly wouldn't be the best

you run 10 inch wheels you are gonna rub like an sob. your gonna want less than stock backspacing i fyou wanna avoid rub as well if you are going big tires

could you give me a little more detail like backspacing i would need, etc

would a 37/12.5 cuz less issues?

i probly will end up with a 35 just because of cost and less things to do to make it work, but want to make sure before i decide one way or the other

for example i run 37x 13.50 on 8 inch wheels, before i had 3.5 in ch backspaing and when the rear would flex it would push the tire into the tub and make hidious noises, not a big deal if it doesnt bother you, i added some spacer which helped but

now i run same wheels with 2 ( the furthest they can go without reverse mounting) inch or 2.5backspacing which pushed the tire away from the body and now when it flexesthere do not rub the tub. you wont need to cut,

my current setup i had to cut because i moved the rear axle back. but thats another story. hope this helps, i can get pics

here is a phot no cutting involved 37x13 on 2 inch bs wheels

Big red, i thought we couldn't run more than 3 1/2" backspacing? this is where i get lost.

camcruiser, do you know what wheels those are?

ok so i have a guy coming to look at my dirtbike in about an hour if it sells, i am probly going to order atleast my front wheels and tires so i can get my rolling chassis together. the wheels on it know won't allow me to mount my steering up.

how does this set up sound.

15x8 MT Classic Locks or Classic 2 backspacing is 3 5/16th's
35/12.50/15 KM2's

how much trimming will be required? should i just go ahead and buy all 4? or buy 2 for now and buy the other 2 later?

buy all 4, you may wanna run some small spacer.

how much? 1/2"?

i always hear that wheel spacers cause the lug nuts to loosen up.

and this 3 5/16th's will allow my steering to turn all the way left to right correct? the wheels on it now would not turn fully both directions, they would hit the inside lip of the wheel. but i have no switched to 4x4 labs crossover steering if that matters

what do you think will look better cam, the locks or the 2's?
