just seeking some advice pls

ive always used the large 15600 41010 filter on my 80 (95 GXL petrol) however when going to the dealer during the week was told theyre no longer available and that 90915-40002 is the new replacement

Its about 40% shorter than the 1560041010 and the guy at the parts counter says its perfectly fine, Thailand made as opposed to Japan

I did the HG on mine 3 years ago and its running like a dream since fixing it & not using any oil at all (apart from a slight leak at the oil pump seal)

Has anyone out there used these on their 1fzfe and any issues or should I be using something else?

thanks
rob

Here are the two filters side by side.

I was passing by a toyota dealer and thought id see if they had any of the 1560041010 left and I got the last one

The 9091540002 is shorter & the 8 holes where the oil passes through are slightly smaller.
Outside diameter is the same

I will try it when I change the oil in a week or so and keep a keen ear out for any odd sounds

Though I wouldn’t hesitate to use the ubiquitous Walmart shelf avail Toyota Thai filters, I went with a forum veteran’s rec aka onur and recently used this slightly smaller filter to replace the og big can because NLA.

IIRC it’s still in production and used in an older model 80s/90s inline-6 Toyota Supra. For as long as I can sustain it (pun intended), I want as many parts on my 80 to remain OEM and if OEM be made in jpn.

i found this so maybe the parts guy was right?

ill use it for the next change and if anything odd will change to the 1560144011

I’ve always used Mobil’s M1-103 on all my 80s, good size, no issues, available at pretty much any Canadian tire... idk where to get it in the states.

Just used the small filter for the first time on my last oil change and noticed the knocking on startup that others have referenced elsewhere on the forum. Never heard it before with the large filters. I don't like it. I might try that Supra filter next time if it's Onur-approved. So that's bigger than the 90915-40002 but smaller than the 15600-41010?

:edit: looks like it's the same as a 22re filter? Listed for a 7mge, but not a gte? Makes me wonder if the turbo supra got a different filter?

FL1A twice a year.

I have used the little Toyota D3 filters for the last 3 oil changes. I have not had any problems or knocks.
The service and parts department at my dealership say that’s what Toyota currently has listed as the recommended filter for the 1fz.

I’m sure the big filters are better, but if the little D3 wasn’t ok to use I don’t think Toyota would list it for the 1fz. I’m sure they put some thought into it.

that being said I probably will try to find the 7m filters after I use up my box of little D3 filters.

FL1A. Huge, cheap, readily available, bypass valve, made in USA. Great filter.
Could you explain what makes the FL1A a “great filter”?

Several years ago I went through my oil and filter obsession phase studying them like my life depended on it. I got over it. While I appreciate good quality oil and filters the fact is that, unless you plan to run that oil for extended OCI’s in extra dirty environments, the D3 filter is enough.

I’ve read a few articles written by geeks who are ultra obsessed with this subject and who dissect oil filters. As it turns out the D3 is a better than average filter and, for its size, contains 50% more filter media that competitors.

If you must have a huge filter to run your oil 5k miles, or less in some cases here on mud, why not go with something that has a glass synthetic media that out performs ordinary celulose filter media? This is why I think the Toyota -41010, or whatever it is, is a waste of money. It’s an over priced cellulose filter.

Thee years ago or so I landed on the Baldwin B2 HPG (high performance glass) filter. It’s full size and filter your oil down to 8 microns. The only oil filter I’ve found that does better is the Donaldson filter I run in my Cummins powered Dodge. But after a couple oil changes using the Baldwin, I decide to stick with the D3.

The D3 produces good UOA’s, it’s very inexpensive, easy to locate and easier to install/remove from down in that hole where it’s mounted. If you are going to inconvenience yourself with more expensive filters and more difficult maintenance you might as well buy a superior filter. There are many filters out there to choose from with the 3/4-16 thread size.

Does anyone know of an actual study looking at oil filter quality? I don't know how a non-Toyota oil filter would cause "knocking" which I would think would be valves tapping from dry seals. We all have anecdotal evidence, but I mean real evidence. Even searching for reviews and comparisons you find mostly places ranking oil filters based on their advertised qualities and not their objective quality. If Toyota's filters really are the best, then great, but the logic of "Toyota approves so I approve" often doesn't always hold up when we look at other things on our trucks, such as deleting certain systems like ABS or EGR or whatever.

@baldilocks would you happen to have a link or author?

Huge has zero to do with filtering oil.

Just make sure the filter you choose has a anti-drain back valve. Due to its horizontal mount mounting position, oil can drain out of the filter after shutdown if there is no anti drain back valve.

I’ve run the Napa/Wix, large Toyota and small Toyota filters and a large filter made by Baldwin on the two 1fz’s I’ve owned and have never heard strange noises of any kind upon start up. Not even immediately after installing a new filter, which is empty, have I experience “knocking”.

Me not get an oil filter pandemic going here. I read earlier in this thread where someone said that they had the same engine knock on start up with the smaller -yzzd3 filter that others have reported. Who reported? I’ve not come across this complaint but I do know that mud is home to many obsessive compulsive maintenance freaks. If you listen/look hard enough, you’ll hear what you want to hear or see what you want to see.

Zero? Are you sure?
Yes, I’m sure. At least it’s “made in USA”. Do you know this filters stats? Bigger means it will hold more dirt before plugging up and bypassing but that still doesn’t tell anyone how well it filters the oil.
