trying to remove the hand grips to see how easy/difficult it would be to remove the headliner on my 94...those screws are shut TIGHT...i dont want to damage them in any way.....any clue as how i can remove them...without an impact thingy?
Would hammering the screwdriver on the screws dislodge them a bit or would it damage them?

On our trucks they are in the bottom of the door panel seems much easier to do them there

i thought so too..but with everythnig out, i sometimes get 'freaky' ideas...guess the lower they are the more light i get where it is intended..... thanx

u have to love these cruisers.... this is my second one...had to sell the past one just 2 months after purchasing it...financial reasons etc.... but it just got me hooked on them... and i hope to pass this one on to my kids... thats why i want to do as much in as perfect as i can

Remove all garnish, screws, handles, tweeters, weather strips....the lot...

done



be very gentle...this is 20 year old plastic...insert a long screwdriver and gently pry out the retainer clip...located closer to the window then the rear hatch. Support the trim with your other hand and watch that the screwdriver doesnt start poking the plastic....it will definitely break





now i need to get to grips on how to safely remove my rear quarter windows (non sliding). but will continue to see how much i can remove.

starting to remove the headliner from the rear hatch....

these clips need to be removed before u begin to remove the headliner....


as i lack 'special' tools...i used a screwdriver (yet again)....gently place it behind the clip and twist the screwdriver outwards...im not really worried about the body paint, but if you are, i would recommend wrapping the screwdriver with duct tape...im going for a paint job once i complete the things i have to do ...and of course....when financially possible.


this is a sort of stiff plastic holding the headliner to the body.....again, using my 'special' screwdriver..same routine as above to release the start or it....then with both hands, go inch by inch pulling it out....dont pull too hard or u might tear or damage the headliner.


look at the state of my headliner....im already thinking of making a new one...preferably vinyl....easier to clean..but will it sag in time due to the intense heat we have over here....any suggestions welcome

the headliner is glued to the body....so you must release it bit by bit....never use excessive force

if anyone can show me a link to how to remove the windows i would be very grateful...

im considering ditching the headliner for a new one .... but i will continue on the removal process because i haven't seen anyone do it to our model.... doesn't mean i cant help out does it?

quarter window removal

turns out the rear quarter window isnt sealed with any glue...just a weather strip....thats what u get for working without a proper FSM.

u have to first run a screwdriver around the outside to loosen it from the body


do the same inside


mine had years of dust, mud, rain, diesel from rooftop canisters tied to the roof rack in them....so instead of rushing it....i will let our HOT afternoon sun do its magic and maybe spray in some water and dish washing liquid...will also need someone to help grab the glass as i remove it .....

unfortunately i couldn't find anyone to help out with the rear quarter window removal...so will have to delay it till tomorrow...i could just cut the headliner with a blade (as i do intend to change it, but i would rather do a write up with plenty of pics to help others if they need to do it.....

but...in releasing the rear end of the headliner....yet AGAIN....stripped, burnt or corroded wires...i will probably need like 2 miles of wires.....

thinking of reusing the wires that are in good condition.....any advice?

ok...so i just dont have anything to do for now...and it was HOT today...thought of giving the rear quarter window a test...as Celine Dion said...All By Myself...

The removal toolset - screwdriver- water and dish washing liquid soap....just depends on your preference...i use fairy liquid in lemon scent...they say its good on the hands.....


With the screwdriver..pry the weatherstrip slightly (but enough to see the grove that sets the window in)....and spray as much as u can....moving bit by bit....for ease of accessibility, i started from the top...that way gravity too can help move the liquid around the window.


Then start bending the weatherstrip from the inside so that it is sort of flexed...makes it easier when ur moving the window outwards...i started from the top rear corner...with the screwdriver anchored to the window opening between the metal and the strip....i pushed out with my hand...NOT the screwdriver or u may damage the glass.



voila.....done....just shows how good a hand job can be....


i was literally shaking, afraid it would pop out or something...finding a spare here is possible...but its not what i would like doing. Turns out it is very light and because of all the dirt inside mine...it literally waited for me to lift it off...

moving on to the driver's rear door..... slowly removed the adhesive prying slowly just underneath it....then with both hands, slowly peel the headliner wrapped around the door opening.

then you find these.....i guess the are found wherever a handle is attached to the headliner.....simply its like adhesive duct tape kinda fabric.....hold onside with each hand and peel slowly....u may need it again if ur returning the headliner.
keep in mind while removing the headliner, there are plenty of those small metal clips i showed earlier....


once u remove the adhesive fabric thingy....MOVE back...i got an eye full from the amount of dust/dirt.....

as u see from the image....wherever the headliner is sewn, it means its attached to these metal rods that are hooked on the roof.... will probably have to move the car out of my super tight garage to work comfortably on the other window and these rods.

Continued to remove the other rear window, door side headliner wrap and the moon/sunroof trim and plastics etc.

down came that part....only remaining parts are those well rusted in rods and the windshield part ....the later one i will just cut with a blade for now, as i dont intend to reuse it and will remove the windshield once i go for paint



look at what keeps coming out of my headliner....im VERY sure mr. toyota never put them their to 'balance' the cruiser
