Hi all,
Originally posted on reddit and got told to ask the question here. To start, I have never used this platform so if i’m doing anything please let me know!

I’m currently looking at purchasing my first car (in Perth Australia) and am chasing an 80 series land cruiser. I’m looking for a 1HDT model but am struggling to find one for a reasonable price to km as i would be keeping this car long term. I’ve also heard about all the dramas with turbo charging the 1HZ motors and shredding them, therefore why the 1HDT motor is so appealing to me. I would be towing many things quite often such as 2 jetskiis or a 28ft boat (therefore the want for a turbocharged motor). I was thinking about purchasing a cheaper higher km 1HZ model with a clean body and swapping out the engine for a 1HDT re-conditioned motor. I figured that the motors are pretty much interchangeable using the same motor mounts and fitting on the 1HZ gear box (with acceptation of the fuel lines and flywheels) i’ve heard that even running the HZ fuel lines that it will run just fine if keeping stock standard power. I was just wondering if this would be worth the money and time doing so or would I be better off waiting for the right car to pop up? (budget of 25k, max 400xxxkm). Would it be worth paying the extra money getting the motor swapped by a mechanic or should i do it myself (along with some mates that have had plenty of experience swapping motors). Also how much should i be trusting these reconditioned motors? I would appreciate any thoughts, comments and ideas about this project. The engine I am looking at is shown in the photos.

Thanks

Yea pretty simple swap. I can't say if it's the right decision because I don't know how much things cost in your area. It's also possible to convert a 1hz into a 1hdt if your up for engine building, drilling holes in the block and buying expensive parts (maybe you can get them cheap used in your area?) your add for the engine doesn't talk about fuel system parts, are they included? they are different and expensive. injectors, hold downs, pump and lines. Pretty sure if you want to run the big 1hdt flywheel and larger clutch you'll have to run a special clutch disk that is compatible with the transmission input shaft, there is something from a medium duty truck that is supposed to work i think. Isuzu maybe?

Do some reading in the Diesel Tech / 24 Volt section of the forum.
There's much more specific information on the diesels than in the 80series section. Mainly because the forum is mostly US members, and USA never got diesel 80series.

$12k for a reco 1hd-t, plus flywheel, clutch, and all the other small parts needed for a swap is a lot to add to the price of a 1hz powered cruiser.
You might do better being patient and specs a bit more on a 1hd-t powered cruiser.

1hd-t uses 300mm clutch.
Flywheel is specific to the 1hd-t

1hz uses 275mm clutch.

1hd-t uses H151F gearbox which had a thicker, 14 spline input shaft. Clutch needs to match this.

1hz uses H150F gearbox, which has a thinner 21spline input shaft.

You can use the 1hz flywheel on the 1hdt, and use a 275mm clutch.
I'm pretty sure European 1hd-t were set up like this.

There's an Isuzu clutch that matches the 300mm flywheel with 21 spline centre.

Toyota used the same size fuel lines for 1hd-t and 1hz cruisers for the first year of two of 80series production. At some point the upgraded to 12mm disk line for 1hd-t abs did a recall to replace 10mm fuel lines due to a fuel starvation issue.
