I need some advice, I bought a 91 land cruiser that was sitting for about 5 years outside. my mechanic got it running but said cylinder 5 has low compression and fears the engine may need a rebuild which he says is costly to say the least. He did however say he will try some marvel mystery oil and see if anything improves. Any advise on where to get a used engine, a swap, or a rebuild if I need it. I’m trying to remain on some what of a budget because there’s a long list of other stuff it needs. Thanks!!!! 😫

^^that.

rebuild is pricy, swap is $$$$$

I once heard from @jonheld that the 3FE doesn't have head gasket problems and you can pour piss in the crankcase and it will run forever.......

Hi, Probably a valve sticking. Pull the head and look first. My engine has 400,000 miles on it . Mike

Get a used 3FE and be done with, probably another 300k miles before needing a rebuild. Now if you have a 1FZ, i would say put in a LS or something, since they are not much faster and blowing HGs is a legit concern....

I have a 3fe head but no good bottom end

I assume the mech adjusted the valves? How low is low? If it runs alright, I'd drive it a while and reassess before condemning it.

You stated that you're on a budget, but you purchased a non-running 30 year old truck that has sat for 5 years outside. This makes very little financial sense to me, even if someone paid you to take the truck.

My fist suggestion would be to have it looked at by someone who knows Land Cruisers, as opposed to a "mechanic". Reach out to the Yankee Toys. They are a local New England Land Cruiser group and have one or 2 talented folks within their fold.

There is also a Land Cruiser specialist in Kingston, NY.

Next, buckle up and open your wallet.

I've got a 93 with a rusted frame at 169k. The engine and trans were fine, run and drive when I parked it this spring. I'm interested in selling it all as a package for parts. The tricky part is I need to keep the title to complete another project. Last time I started it, it fired right up and idled but wouldn't rev. ??
Anyway, if someone needs an engine I've got one. Make me an offer for the whole deal.
This is not the same engine or year as this thread is about.

Post your for sale in the classified section above.
