Hold a nice thick aluminum peace behind it as a blocking shield it absorbs the heat and doesn’t blow through, worked for me lol
Yeah I’m gonna get blown up I suspect but I was hoping to do the roof rust patches only from the outside and slide some metal in to protect the headliner from the cut and tacks.

Take your time with it go slow and let it cool in between so it doesn’t catch fire

Look up @CenTXFJ60 and his headliner install thread (that I think turns into a build thread for Copper). He does a great job of showing the instal.

I think you’ll destroy your headliner if you try to weld the roof with it installed.

Not gonna lie this was pretty hard with just basic sheet metal 18 gauge had to beat it into shape and weld the living hell out of it, I’ll clean the welds after but I made it super sturdy, going to primer it, and rubberized undercoating /rust proof it and do sound deadening inside, all the rust spots are gone

Little more, then gonna grind off the excess welds, I switched to 75 argon it’s so much cleaner

75 argon mix on 18 gauge steel - miller multi matic I think it’s called, but whatever it came out perfect in my eyes all the rust is gone and this is super sturdy, the welds came out really nice in my opinion perfect penetration across the other side too

Taking apart the dashboard going to try to take it all apart do sound and temperature proofing and then try to install a custom particulate filter … let’s see if we can innovate something. Does the FJ62 have a cabin filter???

The long answer...no cabin filter, just a wire screen over the fan intake inside the cowl behind the windshield wiper motor. The screen lets plenty of leaves and debris sneak in over time right down into the cabin fan. In fact dropping the fan to clean out the squirrel cage should be a semi routine maintenance task.

There is some screening/filter/sealing foam past the fan going into the flapper "valve" and evaporator that can be replaced, it's usually pretty degraded and crumbly by now. It's deep in there, but you're most of the way there already. There's a couple threads detailing foam replacement.

Arnak,
Years ago I placed a shop light under the hood and turned out the garage lights, was amazed at how many holes/openings were in the firewall letting air in. Lot's of resealing around hoses, wiring, etc. Also, please take lots of photos under the dash, I may be replacing the evaporator soon.
Thank you!

I wonder if replacing the system to a vintage air is a good idea? Is the system itself good and strong at cold air or it sucks? Haha great info

Great info definitely going to seal it all

I feel like those vintage air systems would struggle to cool the large cabin of a Cruiser. I've mostly seen them in single cab trucks and muscle cars, but who knows.

How’s the original AC in the 62? I haven’t tested mine yet
I was thinking of getting the gen 5 big boy vintage air with the Dakota digital
