Circa 79~81ish? KOA campground Ouray, CO

A young FJBen gets a haircut....with a bowl....on vacation

mom said it she was pretending, I saw my hair back then, I'm not buying it MOM!

We camped there every couple years, ran all the trails.
She said it was a 76 or 77 40. My parents apparently had Previous Owner Syndrome: You know, take a vehicle apply many questionable mods not limited to repainting, bad wiring, duct tape, sheet metal screws, plumbing pipe etc...
So yea, they took a 5 year old at the most FJ40 that was Beige 464, repainted it robins egg/baby blue as she didn't like the brown color. I'm sure my parents also cut up the stock radio hole to fit a radio shack CB that they hooked up with scotch-lock connectors.

They were mainly off-roaders and tried a few different rigs but the 40 was by far my favorite followed by our early 70's Bronco.
There are some old pictures of me in the rigs, I will see if I can find some, funny stuff but it got me hooked.

Fix one thing, up pops another issue.

I finally put the skid plates on in the front. On the BJ74, it has 2. 1 for the radiator, then 1 right underneath the shroud/belts. Both are made of steel at least on the BJ74.

Terrible pictures, and yes I need to replace that steering stabilizer.

Looking down from engine bay, you can see the 2 plates, and another project that needs done....a new A/C compressor.

@Honger what did you use for the splash aprons on the side? I need those, hoping to keep my engine bay less dirty down low.




And of course I got that tell-tale leak by the front right tire, yep axle rebuild time. I knew it was coming sooner or later. Should have replaced that during downtime of rebuilding the engine.

These come with the snaps pre-installed. They are literally ready to pop into your inner fender.

You cut the one side where exhaust runs.
Do yourself a favor and trace one before installing it.
You can them use the pattern and make your own next time.
i was surprised at the lightweight OEM material. Maybe that keeps it from tearing itself loose.

You cut if needed... I didn't have to cut either one. But then again, I'm running a 3F.

I used to make my own for my T100. Did exactly what you said... traced the OEM pattern based on my old ones and used a vinyl floor mat material. They started tearing loose within a year. Ultimately, I went back to OEM. All the ones I've had to replace were old and decaying and had been in place for many years. All the ones I've replaced with OEM pieces are still intact. This is another place I've come to trust the OEM parts as truly superior. Just my experience after trying to "do it better myself".

Despite the trauma from the haircut, you were one lucky kid. When I was your age my dad thought a Rambler was a "cool" vehicle.

Ordered. I'll have them next week and send them to my gasket maker for a die to be made.

At that point I can assess a cost per side.

I make them from 1/8" EDPM so they are much thicker than stock and are heat and oil/chemical resistant as well.
