Hello all,

I have a 1980 California that is complete but I have a 3 hoses that are not connected to anything and need some help please. I took it too a smog station and they wont smog it until they know where the hose should or shouldn't go. I have a Performance HEI Distributor otherwise it is stock to my knowledge.

1) I have a red hose coming out of the firewall and it does not attach to anything.

2) Pic 2 and Pic 3. I have a hose that comes off of an aluminum line (pic 2). This is located at the top front of the engine close to the oil fill cap. It comes off of the bottom aluminum line and is connected to a rubber hose and a "value" (pic 3) but just hangs down.

3) Right below the air filter housing on the passenger side I have this "value" with several hoses connected to it (Pic 4 and 4a). Hoses 1, 2, 3 all connect to each other. Hose 3a is the same hose as 3. It just hangs there. Hose 4 which comes out of the top of the "valve" connects to the top of the air filter housing.

I found this website that shows pics and toward the bottom row of pics it shows pic 4 and 4a connected differently but it does not show where the hose goes to. untitled

The tech also said that the emission tag was missing but didn't tell me what tag it was. I noticed on the above website I just posted they have pics of emission tags. I also found some here as well: 1980 Vehicle Emissions Control Decal [B-44] - $20.00 : CruiserParts.net, Toyota Landcruiser Parts

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

Both the red hose coming from the firewall and the hose under the air cleaner are supposed to hook up to the stock distributor cap. So you may not pass without a stock distributor.

Thank you both. So last question. I'm looking at stock distributors and see them ranging from about $100 to $450. If I go back to one due to not being able to get this smogged are their any suggestions on which one to get?

Thank you.

2F distributors and igniters are petty much the same from ‘79 and up. It should not be hard to fine one. Post up a WTB add in classifieds or maybe you can trade your GM distributor for a late 2F distributor.

X2 on it probably will not pass visual on the smog if the tech knows what a GM distributor looks like. What are the chances of that?

Hopeful P-h-i-l isn't his real n-a-m-e and T-u-l-a-r-e isn't his real home town or "the Man" may track him down.

If I were P-h-i-l, I would edit my post to talk about the stock distributor I installed, I hooked up all the hoses and it passed with flying colors. "have to love Toyota Land Cruisers" ;)

I’m sure the smog police have better things to do. There was a guy in my cruiser club that worked for CARB (CA Air Resources Board) and they went around busting smog shops that took bribes or made mistakes. Taking a payment for falsifying a smog test is much more serious than being ignorant.

My son in law had an FJ60 that never seemed to pass smog. He had to drive an hour to take it to a well known landcruiser specialist and only then it would pass. This happened 3 times in a row. The last time it didn’t pass, I took a look at it and the wires for 2 of the smog VSVs were chewed through and many of the vacuum lines were hooked up incorrectly. Straightening it out took a half a day but then it passed every time. Shops that falsify tests need to be careful or they may go to jail.

LOL, stock one was put back in. It's not worth the headache to go through this every 2 years. Now the decision to keep or sell has crossed my mind. I have always liked the look of these but the gas mileage is horrific.

It's unfortunate for those of you in CAL to have emissions tests forever. Here in MA, yearly emissions (and safety inspections) are only if OBD2 indicates there's an issue, and only then if the vehicle is less than 15 years old.

"The Man" figured that with the millions of tons of rock salt they shovel onto the roads here every winter, there wouldn't be any 15 year-old vehicles on the road to worry about!

They were correct, but couldn't have anticipated people resurrecting rotten FJ40's!

Landcruiser owners are contrarians!
