I ended up leaving with a 2000 dollar offer which I think was way too much. What's your thoughts?

Let the seller think about it. Maybe call back in a few days to see if he's budged. He may have been a bit shaken by the offer being so much less than he was asking...initial reaction is to get defensive and reject it I suspect. With some time to think about it, reality may set in.

wow she is rough - I'd be surprised if he could find another buyer in 2k range...

I mean ami crazy? Would anyone pay more than 2000 for this?
Yes you are crazy. I wouldn't pay that for it. He is being an ass. HE didn't want it to start with so he knows it isn't worth that much. If he doesn't take the 2k he is an idiot. It will probably rust the rest of the way sitting right where it is now. At this point in time if I were you I wouldn't pay that much simply based on the principal of what he is trying to do. Yes he owns it and can ask whatever he wants for it but you also don't have to buy it.

85k is nothing to brag about on that. Look at it. That's been a very rough 85k. 1000 bucks tops is what it's worth. The rest is sentimental money. Thats easy 20k of body work. Your gonna have to replace the tub. Might do body work for 15k if done yourself. 2k is very generous. If u really want it offer 2500

You did the right thing. I can see you offering $2K for your dad's old FJ40. That's a strong offer and says alot. Sorry to hear it didn't work out. Bottom line is you need a FJ40 back in your driveway. You'll save time and money purchasing something more complete. Perhaps put an add up in the Wanted section here. There's lots of good peeps on mud that might know of a good project rig or will keep their eye's peeled for you. So long as they know you aren't going to flip it, which your not, I'd bet there are many here who'll help.

He is gonna call you in a week and say he will take the 2k then you say nah ill give a 1k and leave it at that.

Run Forest, Run !

Run, Forest, Run !

Correction, that's "Run Forrest, Run!"
, as in keep your money and don't look back. Sorry Dad.

There will not be much left of your dads cruiser when your are done with it other than the vin tag and motor.

I'd have a hard time paying more than $750 if I thought the motor was in decent shape. but there is the sentimental side of things. If the frame is trashed then I would say that there is not enough for me to hold onto and feel like I still had dads cruiser when done.

It's a shame that it's so far gone.

Exactly, if he sees the light and calls you I really would give back what he was trying to give.
"Well you know I have thought about it and talked with numerous guys on a Land Cruiser website and I offered too much. It simply isn't worth over 1k but I will give you 1.5k simply because of the history."
Every dime you save now is a dime that you can put into the 40. A extra $500 or 1k can give you a small jump start on the resto. You will spend more in the resto that you want to so save what you can.
PS: Did I mention that I really hate somebody trying to take advantage of someone else. Business is business I understand that but you don't have to screw someone in the process. Just my personal opinion.

It's trumptime, the 'art of the deal' is in play.
No more than $1k.

Enjoy the memories and find another truck. By the time you're done restoring it, not much will be from the original anyway.

Walk away and start new memories with a new truck.

That's not your old truck, yours is that drivable one on CL.
Keep telling yourself that as you walk away from that mess.

If you get a blue one, you can use the same picture.

I recognize the seller. Not personally, but I've met him 1000 times. A dog IQ moron who saw a nut and bolt restoration on the internet for $40k who thinks they can cash in.

After that piece of garbage dies, what's left of the FJ40 will be pushed in a hole, since it won't even sell during the estate auction.

It will probably set there and finish rotting.
You know, I think your Dad would be proud of you making a good effort to honor him, but I don't think he would want you to throw away money, especially to THAT GUY, to do it.
My thoughts, as a Dad. Hope you take them the way they were meant. Best of luck. I think you should find a derivable cruiser that you can enjoy, and paint it the same.
