Is it worth rebuilding a 1.5F engine?
Some say that the 1.5F is the longest lasting of the F engines, smaller displacement and improved oiling and all.
The 1.5F head is useful for putting on a 2F block for increased compression

I didn't know '73s came with F1.5s?
Went away sometime in 74, I know because my 74 has a 2F from 75…somewhere on Mud is a good serial number reference for this..

Thanks everyone. According to the door tag, my FJ55 was built in February of 1973. I had never heard of a 1.5 F engine until the guy I bought it from mentioned that it had one. I thought it weird at the time, but considering the number of Land Cruisers, he had sitting around his shop. I assumed he knew what he was talking about.

I thought the 2F came mid-'75?

My 55 was born in Jan of '74. I got it w/o the engine, but he said it had a 1.5F. It had the 4-speed transmixer, but a 3-speed flywheel/clutch, and the 3-speed t-case.

I see a few citations of the 1F being updated in September '73. So I think any engine that dates from then to the end of '74 would be considered a 1.5F. The parts diagrams also show a number change in Sept '73. Those diagrams still refer to it as a 1F engine though, FWIW.

This table was from the 1974 FJ55 information.

11000ENGINE ASSY, PARTIAL
19000-60110(09/1972 - 08/1973)
19000-60112(09/1973 - 12/1974)

Wow! Thanks for all the information. I’ll take a look for the engine number next to the starter this weekend. I’ve been looking around the ih8mud site and realized that I probably need to move this conversation to the FJ55 forum. I’ll get a thread stated over there later this week. Thanks

That is a sweet 55! Rust is the norm on the 55, and yours really isn't as bad as many. What it does have is a nice list of hard to replace items - floor mat, nice glove box door, AC (!!), unbuggered dash, good door panels (from what I can see). Fixing rust is a pain, for sure, but finding those unobtanium original items is a much bigger pain. The color is awesome, the patina is awesome.

My advice : Don't tear it all apart. Get it running and start messing around with it. Enjoy the journey. A fully taken apart rig for restoration is too often a death sentence for it (ask me how I know, lol).

There is so much help here on Mud that it still amazes all the time.
