I think your die has been cast regarding the patina question. How can all the metal work that will need to be done on the front be finished to look patina'd? The sides look like good candidates for a patina pig, but won't you have to paint or have much of the front in primer if not paint? Maybe fresh paint can be patina'd somehow????

I'd say that if it can be a patina pig, then do it!

Also, Matthew, you need a 2021 pig calendar!
I will paint the top for sure. I'll probably do that sooner than later. It is all surface rust and needs to be painted badly. I think I can pick a color that is close to the faded blue and white and keep the patina look if I decide to go that route.

I need to inspect a little closer, but there has been some paint work done already, so it is not 100% original paint. I think it is more like 90% original. I am a long way from paint so I have some time to think about it.

I love the way the patina rigs look, they also look really sweet with new blue and white. The way I see it is that it will be a sweet ride either way.

Just replace the uppers and work the lowers straight.
Yep. Leave the Patina for now. You can always repaint down the road, but it would be very difficult to get back to patina... unless you start washing it with scotch brite pads and salt water. Or get Proffitt to do a fake patina build on it.

 
It’s only original once.
 
If you are true to getting this done quick and running, best to leave it Patina. One thing I consistently here from those that have done frame off restorations is they never feel like using the truck the way they are meant to be used.

OCD never allows enjoyment.

I never understood why guys will spent, say 75 grand on a resto and say "oh it's too nice to use", but buy a new 75 grand pickup and use it like you should?
New pick up is on loan or lease usually. No sweat equity in it. More like a rental. Beat on it. lease payment hurts less than...

When you have skinned your fingers to the bone sanding an axle to bare metal so you can paint it and put on freshly coated cad hardware...you never want to get it dirty because it took a lot to get it prissy.

I am painting my 40 next week. I am going to try to get it on the road this summer, then I will try to get this 55 running :)
 
I am torn on new paint or keep rattle canning. I like the juxtaposition of the outside vs the modern creature comforts on the inside. New paint seems to gain more attention, and more attention seems to gain more theft. I say get it running and go have fun with it.
 
So, paint it or leave the patina?
I’ll be the one contrarian and say paint it. I’ve never understood the patina thing. But like most have said; do whatever makes you happy.

I hope everything is OK!!

You got your 55 in almost the exact same situation as I got my 40... completely disassembled and the body sandblasted and primed. It is a steep uphill climb to get it back on the road, but I am seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and I am sure you will too. That is going to be a nice 55 when you finish!! I wish mine was a 1977. The upgrades are nice! I will continue to follow!
