I'm replacing the 33" X 12.5" Dick Cepek tires on my '78 with something a little less aggressive. I'm planning to run 33" X 9.5 " or 31" X 10.5" on white wagon wheels.

I know I need a 6-bolt wheel, but is there any other information someone could supply so that I could narrow down my search? I brought a wheel with me to the local wheel/tire center, but even after taking measurements, the parts guy cautioned that the wheels he recommended might not fit. Before I order four new steel wheels, I want to make sure they're the right ones.

I did an Ih8mud search before posting, and I found lots of good stuff about tall wheels vs. fat wheels, and 16" wheels vs. 15" wheels...but I could not find any specifics with regard to standard dimensions.

Thanks.

the only other concern with ordering new wheels would be backspacing... as far as i can see, i'm sure someone on the board will tell you which tires sizes go well with a 15x8 rim with X amount of backspacing...

Check with Jegs/Summit

Check with Jegs or Summit before you buy your wheels. They have pretty cheap prices.

Can't help with the backspacing, I don't know.

3.5" backspacing

That is for the stock 5.5" steelys. I'd go with 7" wide at most for 33x9.5s. I have 31x10.5s on my 5.5" stockers now and they're a bit wide for the rims, but not a lot.

3 1/2" BS should work for you. My white spoke 8 X 15 would not fit after I did my disk brake conversion (79 axle) with the large 4Runner calipers.

My 9.5 X 33 BFG's looked stretched on the 8" rims.......7" wide would be good

8" wheels

Just bought five 8 X 15" white wagon wheels form Summit. Including shipping price appx $165. Great deal. Part number USW-70-5860. These clear just fine on both disc brake and drum brake axles. I've used these wheels on FJ40, 55 and 60 models, also on 4Ruinners and Toy trucks. Summit is good to deal with and their online catalog is pretty good, too. Gary S (Shmukster)

So what tire are you going to?
More "street" tread? Smaller tire??

The DC's were probably the single best snow tire ever made. More so in the larger sizes.

So you might be in for a abrupt change when the snow flys. And, from what I hear, it happens a lot there (I was born in Limestone).

Figure it this way. Get a rim that is 2" smaller than the width of your tire. And has 3.5" backspacing..

Sometimes you can get away with a 3.75 (mostly not) and sometimes the center design of a 3.5" rim will hit the disk brake caliper. If it does, it shoudl be by a small ammount. Typically, a small amounting of grinding on the caliper (there is a lot of meat there) will sove the issue.

BTW, stick with a 15" rim. more options for tires.

search the for sale section for either chrome or white spoke oem "spoke steelies".

the chromes are off 60's......and maybe 62's. while the whites were an option wheel on the 40's in the early 80's.

i found a set some time ago $200, 5 wheels with 4 mounted 33x9.5 bfg's.

Toyota white wagon wheels had 6 spokes. Most aftermarket ones have 8 spokes. In case it makes a difference to you.

I've settled on 31" X 10.5" tires, so now I just have to order some new wheels. The ones on Summitracing.com look good, but I'm a bit worried about the backspacing. I measured the backspacing on my current wheels last night -- it's 3.5". The ones shown on Summitracing have 3.75" of backspacing. I don't know how excited I'd be about grinding some metal off the brake calipers in order to get the wheels to fit. Shmukster, can you pm me with a bit more information about the ones you've used? Thanks.

No, that's 1/4" the other direction. You'd need 1/4" spacers. I'm sure I have more than 1/4" clearance with the same tire size. I say they'll work. I'd be more worried about the 2-1/4" they're going to stick out extra on the other side compared to the stockers.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of spacers that pass the lugs thru. I would not use a back spacing of 3.75". The alloys I'm running are 15x8 with a back spacing 3.25" and they look good with the 33x10.50s.

Not to jack the thread, but does anyone know off the top of your head if Mickey Thompson Classic II's will fit the FJ40?

Just the name of a wheel isn't enough for anyone to say it will fit or not fit. Read the stuff about backspacing - that's what makes it or not if the pattern is right and the lugs long enough.

I'm pretty sure that Summit can get the wheels in most any backspacing. You'd have to call them.

I realize. Its an extremely popular wheel, thats the only reason why I thought someone would know. And my computer wont access their site for some reason so.. nm I guess. Thanks anyway.
