I am looking to purchase this vehicle and wanted to get your advice. I am looking for originality and reliability. The vin plate shows nov 1981. The engine is color blue. Is there any reason for this? Is there anything in particular I should be looking for? Is this a us spec vehicle? Does the vin match the frame and engine? I've had this truck for 15 years. It's got slightly more than 50K original miles on the engine. Since acquiring it, I've added disc brakes (the original drums just didn't grip) as well as power steering (so my wife could drive it - not that she actually has!), and have acquired all of the pieces for a great, IPOD-based, stereo (yet to connect it). Additionally, I've added five new tires.
The vehicle runs incredibly well (all oil and fluid changes performed), and has no mechanical issues. There are some small rust spots on the body (see pictures), but in general the truck is quite clean. I don't have a garage, but I'm very disciplined about keeping a tarp over it to prevent moisture from...

As of February 4, 2020, new pistons +.030 (ITM), rings, rod bearings +.020, cylinders honed, rebuilt cylinder head and gaskets, water pump and thermostat gaskets, and exhaust gaskets.
Odometer reading at time of overhaul (32032) actual mileage unknown. Less than 1,000 miles on Dick Cepek 33 x 12.5 x 15 tires. Break pads and shoes recently replaced.
90’s Jeep Wrangler tilt steering column and seats (recently reupholstered)
All dash pads recently replaced (Fj40.com), headliner recently replaced. Rear ambulance door latch replaced. Period correct center console.

Great thing about the fuel injection, fires up at 50 or 12,000 ft, no problems. Drive it around town, or on the trail.

For Sale Sacramento, CA: 1965 FJ40 Project - PTO Winch - CA Black Plates - Minimal Rust - Many Spare Parts
I recently purchased this 40 from the grandson of the original owner. It is a nice original example, ready to be put back on the road. Original doors and soft top frame have been removed, but are included (see photos). It had a BestTop top on it, which is also included, but not in the greatest of shape. Many of its miles came from being towed, and it has a sweet towbar setup. This has a PTO winch and rear jump seats. Very little rust. 3.9 liter straight 6, 3 speed manual transmission, hi/lo transfer case. Original CA black license plates will stay with the car IF sold within CA.
Includes many spare parts such as wheel bearings, brake master cylinder, wheel cylinders, fuel pump, spark plugs, distributor caps, coil, points, water hoses...
This was purchased in '94 by grandpa and garage kept in Colorado until 2017 when it came down to phoenix. The engine was rebuilt in '96 and the more recent maintenance includes new tires, shocks, battery, water pump, thermostat w/ housing, and hoses. In the sixteen years of ownership it has been driven 22k miles including to the top of Imogene Pass. Since coming back to Phoenix it has seem a little more exposure and so some of the surface rust has developed. Notable points of rust are the floors which are not rusted through but more than surface rust, small spot around the rear window bottom corner, and one star in the passenger rear quarter. Good opportunity for the right person. No known problems, everything works as it should. I would have no problem, after a fluid and filter change and a brake adjustment, heading north to Canada(NO HEATER) or south to Patagonia. Heading south, this is a perfect expedition vehicle. With it's Costa Rican plates, it reads as local rather than gringo. First owner was a judge who purchased it new. Drove it on the weekends. I have original paper work. Second owner was a surfer named Lance who owned it for 11 days and never even put it in his name. I purchased it in July of 2005 with 93,000 kilometers and it now has 155,554 kilometers(96,000 miles).

2f in-line 6 motor that runs awesome. The motor is out of a 1978 fj40. When I purchased the mustard it had a bad 350 in it that I removed.
