I flew to CO, purchased my '06 with 294K on the clock. It was already modified and had several things that needed addressing before I even flew out. Drove it back to Atlanta in 2 days and didn't miss a beat. If you travel a good bit, I would book two one way tickets on Delta, and if you don't feel comfortable you have a return leg...if you do feel comfortable you cancel and get the e-credit for another flight you may do in the future. That's what I did.

Hello All,

I am considering what to do with my 2004 100 series that has succumbed to Northeast Ohio winters. The frame is essentially shot, but still driveable. Front stabilizer bar is rusted off but still on the truck as I could not get it off. Very rusty underneath. Leaking driver axle. 216,000 miles and engine runs great. Although no symptoms, water pump/timing belt was last done at 115k miles. I think the engine, transmission, transfer case and rear axle are still good. The interior is in great shape, both front seats and rear bench seat and 3rd row seats. A/C blows cold still...

I flew out to Oregon to pick up my '04 and drove it back to VA over 5-6 days. One of the best trips I've ever done. Had a buddy with me and got to know the car well. It didn't miss a beat.
1000% recommend driving it back if your schedule allows.

I would fly down to meet up with your sister and see what you could help her with before driving that 100 home. Heater tees is the big item I’d make that it was replaced. Check the tires (including spare)

Hello all! My name is John Kleva and am newly registered. I am purchasing my sister in laws 2000 Land Cruiser. It is a dream specimen. She is currently sitting with about 75k miles. Always garaged, whether at home or work and has been dealer maintained its entire life. My sister in law recently had surgery and has decided that lc is a bit much for her. The lc will be coming from the Houston area and I am located in New York. I am on the fence of flying to Houston and driving her back or having a shipping company do it. The only issue is that the lc has not been driven much the past year and a half and am not sure if I should do a 1700 mile initial road trip with it because of that. What do you guys think? Looking forward to making her mine!

I didn't do a trip as long as the one that you're going to do (and I'm jealous), but when I bought my first Land Cruiser, I did a fly and drive of about 400 miles. It was an absolute blast... and the truck got me home with 0 problems... and it helped me to realize... quickly... just what a pig the 3FE is.. lol. Part of the charm...

I used Sherpa and had a 5 star experience but if I had of known a MUD member had a transport company, I likely would have used them.

I'd drive it for sure. I'd do a lite inspection, before hitting the road.
Tires all 5: age, condition and PSI.
Jack & tool kit.
Lights
Coolant level under radiator cap and res.
Brake fluid.
PS fluid.
Oil level. no more than 1 yr old.
Make sure all vacuum lines connected.
Listen for tick. By place ear in each fender well.

TICK TICK TICK POP POP POP is a ticking time bomb, often mistaken as exhaust manifold crack or gasket leak leak.

ALERT, ALERT, ALERT: Spark plugs are working themselves loose. "Walking Out" Then blowing out of head, taking their female threads of head with them! Very damaging!

You think TICK or POP, is blown exhaust gasket or crack exhaust manifold. Replace the spark plugs. If tick doesn't go away, then you've confirm exhaust leak. Exhaust leaks anywhere need to be taken care of. But they're less damaging if damaging at all. But, if you blow...

Yet another alert

I'm just see, all to often, where engine Air Filter is installed improperly and rubber seal of filter has curled.

How could that be. We just pop in a fasten down with 4 clips right. Well right. But if care is not taken during install, to seat lid on seal. The seal gets curled and is ineffective at sealing.

Once rubber seal curled, it gets pinched. Then In most cases, not reusable.

This allows dust into intake. Inspecting air pipe can be helpful at revealing how much dust has entered the intake. Any dust in air tube is never a good sign.

I'd also use a blue-tooth OBD device. log the whole trip on my smart phone.. Watch ECT & fuel trims.

I've a 06LC w/192K I just bought. In reading history I found PO complained of engine temp raising when both front and rear AC on. Toyota Dealership diagnosed with clogged radiator fins. Recommended new OEM radiator, $600 for the US spec Radaitor plus coolant and labor. They should have added radiator cap and thermostat to job, as best practice.

Got me to thinking about the radiators I've been replacing. All have debris built up on lower third.
This one hand some extra grasses along with general clogging on lower third.
