..if I find a Scout II that I like, I may go that route...

:grinpimp: Good luck with that, they may be even more rust prone than old Cruisers. Also, prices have become ridiculous for them too.
After owning a couple Scouts myself over the years, my advise is to happily pay a few thousand more for a Land Cruiser.
There's nothing about a Scout that's superior to a LC, absolutely nothing, and a lot of it is inferior.

$8k was going to be my max, and I wouldn’t have even sniffed winning. I’m in no hurry, and I’m willing to travel. I really want a less rusty body...just a body that doesn’t need major attention for a few years. I travel too much right now to pull one apart. I know I’ll pay more, and that’s ok. And while it’s blaspemous to say on here...if I find a Scout II that I like, I may go that route.

If you look at enough FJ40's you will see that unless you pay $20k or more, they will all have some rust. The one here on BaT looks like mostly surface rust which is not a big deal. I actually like the patina look. If you are looking for something you can drive for $8k, you are going to have to be OK with a little rust.

I would suggest looking for something that is solid mechanically and doesn't have anything critical as far as rust. If you need to buy some time to drive it for a while, you can clean up the rust spots and seal them with something like POR15 or KBS and that will slow it down until you have time to do it right.

There are lots of great threads on here you can read and learn from. Feel free to PM me if you have specific questions.

One other option... It seems like there occasionally are some that show up on Craigslist and the body is in pretty good shape, but don't run, or don't run well. They have been parked for a couple years. If you could find one of these for $6500-$7000, you could spend a little money to get it running right. I know this is a gamble, but that is part of the deal with limited funds, trust me, I know. Also, this is part of the fun for me. I enjoy "the hunt"!

Good Luck

I knew that Scout mention would rustle a Jimmie. I have an FZJ80, and I’d prefer a 40 for the aftermarket options. My wife, however, likes the way the Scouts look. She actually doesn’t like 40’s at all. She’d take an old Bronco over Scouts AND 40’s but talk about prices skyrocketing...

No way I expect to get a good driver for $8k. I’m willing to pay over $20k for the right one. The only reason I gave this one a 2nd look was its proximity to my house. I fly back to the US today...then fly back out of the US in 2 weeks. My ability to pound the pavement is hindered by work right now...

Oh... sorry I misunderstood you :)

If you have $20k+ to spend, you have lots of options out there.

overton seems to have some good ones! I would check him out.

Yeah, I watch his site. I really like his mustard one in CA but I won’t be home long enough to fly out there...

The truck in BaT looked super clean and had a very nice patina. I think $12k was a very fair price for both buyer and seller. I’m no expert on 40s, but would put a good amount of value on one that was honest and hasn’t been monkeyed around with too much like that one was.

I totally agree!! Like I said $12k was fair... I am just super frugal/stingy/cheep :)

The 2F motor and the 4 speed are NICE upgrades!! and the patina was really cool!!!
