Wish my rims looked that good haha, but also no budget to change the old ones.
Ended up going Wildpeaks 265 btw for a few reasons:
-Like the agressiveness of the WP better than the rest + better wet traction than Toyos and it pisses down in Aus more than it snows.
-The WP in 265 are actually a 32 inches tyre, when Toyo is 31.6. It's close to the Toyo in 285 which is a 32.8. It felt like going in between a 31 (stock) and 33 tyre which seems like a good inbetween. weight is only 1.5 kg more than the Toyos.
-The WP in 285 are just too heavy, 28.5 kg, screw that. 3kg more than the Toyos 285 per tyre.
I'll let you know if I like them

So Ive got the new Wildpeaks on. Same size as previous ones but previous ones were really getting bad. I noticed the braking feels not as reactive now, like the pedal feels stiffer and the car takes more time to brake. Is this expected on brand new tyres (factory lubrification + new threads + being a big larger as new?). I dont see how the tyre shop could have touched anything .

that doesn't sound like it has anything to do with new tyres, and more so the brake booster. This happened to mine after one 2 hour drive once, and my booster was almost cooked and needed replacing. Are you running the factory booster? When was the last time you did your brake fluid?

Yeah but the fact is happened right after installing new tyres? It still brakes fine but I think because heavier tyre and deeper threads I just need to press a bit more. However maybe I need to check my break booster anyway, because 4 months ago I was driving down a very long steep hill and had to break non stop. By the end of the hill the pedal was pretty stiff. Then went back to normal so I did not think too much about it. Due for a brake fluid change have not done it since I got the truck 60,000 ago. Brake pads are 6mm at the front and 3mm at the back.
Just because I felt this right after changing the tyres, but maybe these new heavier tyre just putting a bit more stress on the braking system which is making me look into it now. Went under the truck and all brake lines look ok btw.

also is there a simple way to test the brake booster? When the car is parked and turned off, if I press a few times on the pedal it then gets really stiff. If I keep my foot on the pedal then and start the car, it compresses. I thought that meant booster is likely fine.
brake fluid should be changed every 2 years as its hygroscopic and attracts moisture. I had exactly what you're describing, and it happened suddenly. I don't know how to test the booster, but replacing mine fixed this issue and normal braking was restored. I thought mine was okay, because I did the same test as you, but clearly it was failing (or at least that's what they told me). Maybe try changing the fluid, bleeding and see if it improves first before replacing the booster.

The brake place stung me $1340 installed, because they told me the booster was a 4 bolt and my factory master cylinder was only 2 bolt, so hit me for a new master cylinder as well. Plus labour on top. I've got a DBA brand booster in mine. I would have done it myself if I knew it was going to cost me that much, plus I would have sourced a 2 bolt upgraded booster. They were idiots, and I scrubbed it up as a lesson.
Apparently the PDI boosters are good for the money (still going to set you back $650 for the booster alone). DBA are expensive, you've also got Bendix and Terrain Tamer available here. All of them are dual diaphragm 'heavy duty' boosters. Check to see if yours is 2 or 4 bolt.
I don't recommend putting a no-name brand in. You don't skimp when it comes to brakes. You could also suss out how much a genuine booster costs from Dave Stedman or through Amayama.

they're around the place, look like aussie Sahara rims. The factory alloys are built like a tank.
the 40th anniversary rims are similar tothese but they have a machined groove in the spokes and a charcoal colour in the groove and between the spokes.
Edit: these are 285/75r16, bit smaller than I'd like but with a age, a few things have changed; I don't want to run illegal tyres, and I can't face the fiasco of getting engineering to run 35s

It’s funny people always want what they can’t get in their market. You can’t hardly give a set of stock 80 series rims away in the states. Good, classic looking rim though.
80 or LX450 wheels will be the only ones I will run on mine. I agree with Mark Whatley: They're good quality and the best looking Toyota 4x4 wheels ever made.
I went with the 265/75r15 when I bought mine 5 years ago with bald tires. They are more common and about 1/2 inch taller than the stock 275/70r/16. Actually my 80 came to me with smaller than stock size tires at 265/70r/16. I don't care for the appearance of the largest tires possible stuffed under Cruisers, which seems to be all the rage these days.
For sure that also comes down to preference and what you actually do with your Land Cruiser. You won’t make it far on 31’s unless you’re lightly off roading or national park crawling. I’ll agree it’s stupid to stuff 35’s if you don’t need them, but then again I’m not the federal government trying to tell people how to live.

After a trip of around 600 km braking back to normal. It felt really sketchy before like had to press harder to get the car to stop, not as reactive. So yeah new tyres new thread + manufacturer lubricant to prevent mold = need to be broken in. Ill remember for next time
interesting, never experienced that before! Regardless, a great time to do your brake fluid
i agree with the 35's comment despite the looks side of things but not the 31's
ive done Billy Goats Track in the Vic High Country a few times on 265/75x16 & 2" lift with no issues and its definitely not a walk in the park. Its all about taking the right lines etc
Off topic question do 1FZ-FE engines in AUS have factory EGR valves?
