Im in the process of setting up all the crap that passes through/is attached to my fire wall and was hoping to see some pics of what others have done.

The fw is from an early 70's 40 but the carb on the motor Im using is set up for the linkage.

So far I have to make up a plastic mount/guide since the one on the fw is cracked and a bracket at the carb (aisin stocker) for the end of the housing. Planning to use mountain bike brake cable/housing as the throttle cable and I might incorporate a barrel adjuster to have a little adjustment in there.

Ive seen the set up trollhole sells but since I have everything I need to make my own..... Post up some inspirational shots of what youve come up with.

For everyone else. :p It's not really that hard to make and works. Uses an early 70's throttle cable

I did a search but found no info on Trollhole's setup. A link or more info on that one please?

No pics right now, but in 1996, I used a bike brake cable and components.
Drilled a hole through rod at top of pedal 1/2" down, corresponding hole through firewall, used brake parts for ends, and made it work... And it works well.

I used a modified 73 bellcrank assembly on my 86 carb. 73 cable, and a modified link (shortened) from the bellcrank to the throttle lever...

I'm running something similar on my 1972 using the 69-73 cable.

Y not do away with the cable set up and go with a linkage stet up off a newer model 40 79-82ish? All the holes are there and you can use it with just about any carb

Ill look again but it seems the brake booster would be in the way? Maybe....

Already got a cable gas pedal to go w the fw and also have the hand throttle to go with the pedal set up so...

Im really looking for close ups of how the end of the cable attaches to the carb linkage and where the bracket that holds the cable housing bolts on. Trollhole posted up a good one (thanks man) but its kinda hard to make out details. A shot of how/where people have routed the cable would help as well..

Thanks for all of the replies and pictures btw.

Trollhole's setup is one of the cleanest, and pretty much matches the factory setup.

I used a custom built bracket on mine for years that allowed the barrel end on an early 70's throttle cable to attach to a piece of the original throttle rod with the round ball clip on the end. It had a turnbuckle inbetween the two attachment points to allow adjustment for cable stretch which is critical over time. I used a generic ball stud for a Holley carb mounted in the lower engine side hole of the throttle bracket. It was pretty much identical to the Trollhole picture above, but I was happy with the leverage on the factory plate there. Trollhole is adding the aluminum plate you see for better leverage and adjustibility. My only difference was instead of making a bracket that goes to the carb like his, I made a simple bracket bolted to the side of the 2F aircleaner above that carb area. Throttle cable went up from there in a bit of a tight bend and snaked back down and to the throttle pedal.

The other option as mentioned above is the bellcrank piece on the mid 70's engines, it uses the cable to pull and arm that pushes the linkage with one adjustable rod. I'm using that now on a 2F carb on a 1F engine, works great. Worst part is the bellcranks use a riveted pivot pint that wears out over time and gets sloppy. I drilled mine out and put a bot through with washers and such to make the pivot a bit more solid.

However, my old setup worked very well for years. The bracket on the aircleaner was a galvanized L bracket from the hardware store and a cable saddle clamp the matched the hole spacing on the L bracket and the end of the throttle cable fit in the saddle with some innertube wrapped around it. I had to improvise, built it all with basic tools behind my apartment in college.

Here's mine. I used ball joint ends from the hardware store, welded screws to the link pieces and built a pivot bracket that mounts to existing threaded holes on the firewall. It allows for engine movement without any binding. Now I just have to take it back off for paint. It uses the same bushings as my hinges in the pivot bracket.

Might get to tinkering with the throttle cable today. Havent accomplished much so far but I at least smartened up and remembered to throw the air cleaner assy on to check for clearance/cable routing. Its a cold weather set up so it takes up more space compared to some of the smaller ones Ive seen.

Also found that an mtb rear derailleur bolt/tab, the one that secures the end of the cable, fit perfectly in the little hole on the throttle linkage. So the plan so far is to use the derailleur bolt/tab to secure the cable end to the linkage, make the bracket to hold the end of the housing out of a spare choke bracket I have, and use some thick uhmw plastic at the fire wall. Thinking of using a barrel adjuster from an mtb brake lever screwed into the plastic at the fire wall to get some adjustability.

Who knows how itll end up..... not me lol. Inventing s*** is the fun part.

Been running this way without problems since 1996. Built from a bike brake cable, bike brake components, and a scrap of aluminum... KISS.

If something fails, it can easily be fixed. Cost $8 for a good brake cable (cheap ones are just that).

There is one small hole drilled trough the end of the throttle peddle and one hole through the firewall.

You did say homebrew, right.:D

Damn straight man, exactly the kind of inspiration I'm lookin for.

Mtn bike parts will be tidier... Harder to find back in 96.

So, bikersmurf, why does it route through the pedal linkage?

It goes through the end of the metal bar inside the firewall... 1/8" hole drilled through, so that it pulled the end if the cable when the pedal is depressed. On engine side the linkages are cut off.

When I swapped in my sbc, I used a f250 cable. It worked for quite a few years. Dirt and junk worked its way in and then I finally built the bell-crank bracket that I posted. It works awesomely! I had to weld screws to steel rods and buy the expensive hardware store ball joints, but there's no way it will gunk up. It's so smooth.

Here's another pic which might help with perspective...
