I'm having trouble finding a color close to the glovebox/gauge cluster color - anyone find something that matches?

Glossy gray is too flat/uniform, need some sparkle.

"Metallic" spray paints are too bright and just look like Al foil.

???

Rustoleum, surprisingly, makes a rattle can...mottled paint. I think it is hammertone...looks great on my heater restoreation.

JTO sells a pewter color in spray cans:

Land Cruiser Silver Trim Paint (pewter) - JTOutfitters

I haven't tried it myself but thought I read here that someone used it with success on the dash pieces. I actually sandblasted mine really well and sprayed with gloss clear coat from a can. Not that far off stock color and looks good.

interestingly enough, Hobby Lobby sells hammertone paint in a steel grey that looks terrific...rattle can easy.

I have tried them all that come from a can, that is the best.

But for powder coat I have a few I just finished up.

PM me for details

I used the JT stuff with good results, but make sure you shake it for a very long time otherwise you will get seperation in the paint. Shake it longer than you normally would and test it first.

Ask me how I know.

Wish I would have seen this (or searched harder); I recently painted my Proffitt's ash tray switch plate and I used some Rustoleum metallic silver. It looks OK, but it is lighter than the glove box and instrument cluster.

JTO stuff was disappointing, certainly doesn't match well enough to be used next to the stock color. The color isn't right, but even moreso its loaded with metallic particles and sparkles like a 9 year old girls bicycle.

Any other ideas? What about not in a spraycan?

Morton Stardust Silver is a powder coat color that is pretty close...

The trick to perfect color matching? Do not try to match the new color to something existing on your truck. It will be old and faded/stained. Just paint/powder coat all the pewter pieces at the same time so you can't compare anything. :D

Haha, well, that works for your own truck, but less so if you're trying to offer something for sale.

Hmm.

there is a color code chart posted here somewhere from 1969 found it
and it says the code for the glove compartment door is
T1434 grey M.
code 69 fj40.webp

Dude, I'm sure this has been covered more times than lift kit and tire questions. You want Toyota Ash Grey Metallic, the code is in the faq, or could be found through search. t is the factory correct exact match. You'll need a spray gun or check with your local auto body paint store, they should be able to put it in a spray can for you.

Dupli-Color T408 Pewter very close

I know this question seems to get posted every other week, but other than the CCOT mix, I've never seen a specific reference to an over the counter paint.

Thanks, Dusty-- I'm going to try and scope a can of T408 Pewter and give it a try!

Pretty sure that is what I have used in the past. Pretty close. To be on the safe side I just paint all the parts. That way they all match.

"T1434 grey M." is apparently unobtainium, but someone here on mud said that T145 is somehow related (crosses to Sherwin Williams Ash Gray Metallic)- so I've got a can of that en route.

If that doesn't work, I'll try the T408.

I have to find a very good match and can't just repaint everything, unfortunately. I've made a reproduction mold of the BJ42 OEM tachometer bezels that work with aftermarket (gasser) tachs and all that is remaining is getting the flipping bezel the right color so I can sell them. @#$%@#$

Don't bother. It's not close enogh.

I just went through this and quickly gave up trying to get the original colour mixed up as no one had heard of it or could get any info on it. Took a sample and got it matched by a paint business that deals only in car paints and does matching on a daily basis and here is the result. Ashtray cover is the matched paint, glovebox is original.
By the way bare metal is a very close match to it shade wise, metal is just slightly brighter.
