Thinking about selling everything and buying a geo tracker!

Better yet, set it all on fire and collect the insurance

I know I have felt that way many times over, but I just can't give this stuff up it is like crack:hillbilly:

what insurance?

I ran 37s and stock axles with a rear locker without issue. They can handle it if you drive it right using finess and momentum, but if you are like Dan and the only way you know how to wheel is with the skinny pedal pushed through the floor board engine bouncing off the red-line.... they prob. won't last long :hillbilly:

Breaking stuff is just weakness leaving the Cruiser.

This coming from the guy without shocks and toasting his diff...

Gehetto engineering is the way of the MAFIA, Chuck now carrys that torch for me :grinpimp:

But seriously though those 60 series axles are fairly robust, they will handle 35's and lockers just fine.

In general I think most cruiser heads fail to quantify the type of wheeling we do around here relative to the majority of those on Mud. This is where critical thinking comes into play when making such recommendations instead of just regurgitating what you had previously heard on mud. The forces of friction are greatly mitigated by the normal damp and soft soil we so often wheel in our region .....say was John going to wheel his dual lockers and 35's say in Moab, The Con, or really any where west of the Rockies. I would say yes he was asking for trouble as they have generally much more resistant/friction inducing wheeling terrain i.e. dry rock and sand stone.

Welding the front makes for some heavy steering vs a selectable. I would opt for open front and locked rear then save up for an ARB.

I agree with you. I wouldnt do a weld front end. I already own an lockbox for the rear. ARB would be great, but the cost vs how much i wheel would not be worth it. Worst case, i'll just lock the rear and run the front open.

John, I just cut the fenders on my 62 with 5" Alcans and new (raffleprize) 35" BFG KM2s. I had to cut alot. Also extended the bumpstops. I'm going to URE this weekend so I'll let you know how it does.
I have an Auburn Ltd. slip in the rear now, but I'm getting an Aussie Locked third this weekend from Jason Free. The ltd. slip will go up front.
I have the Jeep locked in the front, and there are lots of steering issues, especially in the mud.
I rode with Steen in his 40 at D'town with ARB,s and being able to turn them off in that slop was awesome.

John, look on the lowcountry site under the Cruisin' the Carolinas. there is a good flex pic and you should be able to see it. if not, let me know and I'll take a couple and post them.

I have locker in the rear, auburn slip in the front, stock axles and 35's and so far it's not been a problem. Could be that I can't find the time off from work to use the darn thing. But really what David and Chuck said are true I used to run 34's (don't think they even made 35's at least there were none avaliable in the backwoods of tennessee in the 70's) on my FJ-55 And I wheeled the tar out of that truck 230,000 miles worth in a few years, and the area was just like golden mt. It was rough, saw lot's of broken axles on jeeps and IH Scouts but that 55 never let me down in the woods not once. If I was going to do a lot of solid rock wheeling like out west yes then hardened axles are worth the money, and sure If I do break one now I will upgrade but unless that happens the stockers are stout and will have the chance.

Well, I made it. The rear bumper and all the touch ups will be done in January.
