That was my answer when she asked if I put gas in it. The words in my head were not appropriate to share.
So here's what I have done to my 76' FJ-40 btw it's all stock with da smog.
I rebuilt the Carb and relined the Fuel tank. Did all the basics, put in some fresh fuel. And started it up. This was a proud moment, It actually ran. So I let it warm up and took it for a drive around the resort. All was great. It sat for a few days and I thought this would be a great time to do some fine tuning. It started right up ran for a few minute and "crap" it died and would not start. Not remembering how much gas i put in I added some more and it started again. DId the adjustments and took it out on the HWY and "cool" it runs good. Happy JOy Joy. About a month later I decided to do some light 4 wheeling. The nice thing is I just have to drive out of the back side of the resort where I found some snow to play in. After about 10 minutes I started to loose power and WHat? out of gas. SO i went and put in more this time the 5 gallons and now it is full up into the filler neck. defiantly more than 5 gallons. And it started again. I'm not thinking it is out of gas. Any ideas what could be happening?
 
Did you hook up the fuel lines to the tank correctly?
 
Fuel filter clogging?
 
Long shot, but next time it loses power, crack open the gas cap and see if it is vapor locked. It's possible your tank vent is malfunctioning.

It is possible to have some random bits of tank paint make its way to the fuel filter. Even if you thoroughly flushed it. I wouldn't think that would be enough to clog your fuel filter but it's something to keep in mind.

It may also be as simple as some crud from the fuel line after the filter has migrated to your carb. If new fuel line was installed, sometimes bits or rubber are present.

When it dies, where is the fuel level in the sight glass? Perhaps run it for 9 minutes;), then park it slightly downhill, pull bowl drain plug, collect the fuel that comes out in a cup and inspect.

Hmm. I could be wrong but I think it may need some pressure.

The system is supposed to hold some pressure in the tank, to help keep gas from boiling. If the cap shoots across the garage when removed, there is too much pressure. If it just releases 15gals. of slightly pressurized gas vapor, then it's OK.

I know this from experience. if you have a glass fuel filter you will be able to check for fuel in it when it shuts down. or crack the fuel line loose between the tank and filter to break the suction.
 
Went through similar with a customers car
Replaced in tank fuel pump car did it a week later
And got towed in again this time dropped tank
Found several things in the tank didn't know what they where
The secretary at the shop did though tampons
The wife isn't jealous of the time your spending
With your tin girlfriend is she ?

I experienced this as well. quiet frustrating to pin point
 
Thank you all for the great comments and advise. Unfortunately I have not been able to do any work on her (My FJ not my wife) beacuse of a family emergency. It looks like I will be back at it in a few weeks and I will keep you posted on the results.
 
Or maybe 3 months. Took the day off to work on this. Found 2 things the return line was crimped when I installed the fuel tank cover, fixed that. Checked the fuel filter it was clear but found the supply hoses to be deteriorated, replaced hoses and filter and now she works just fine.

I know how things go... a while back mine started making a knocking noise. I didn't have time to inspect further, but there appeared be an excessive amount of slop in the timing chain (SBC). Long story short, it has now been over a year that the parts have been sitting on the shelf. That's just the way it works out sometimes.

Yep, here is the sad part. I have a dozen or so parts sitting on the shelf, some my wife bought, yea she's a keeper. And I just need a 8 day week so I can have a day to git it all together and start enjoying it.
 
She's a keeper... I'm hoping to get it back on the road this summer. So far it's not looking promising... body hasn't been cooperating.
