Aftermarket copies are rarely completely true to original parts. I would imagine if it fits OK it will suffice.

FWIW, I used the Dorman part to replace my VSV about a year and a half ago and my FJ62 has sat in the garage for a year of that time while I was on deployment. It already died a couple of weeks ago. I just replaced it with the dealer part # above, $20 after the military discount. Hopefully it lasts 25 years like the original, not a year like the aftermarket!

What dealer part are you referring to? I had quotes of almost $500.00 for dealer originals. I put in the Dorman and it is working but at the point I have a new problem. 4WH will not disengage. I would assume that this is telling me that I need to replace the other VSV but I was wondering what you used that cost $20.00. By the way what did you do for military discount. I am US Army retired.

Iceman,
The dealer part is noted in the first post. You have to ask for P/N 88690-89132 (Magnet Valve Assy) off a 22R Engine which was in pickups and 4Runners.

Thanks. Did not go back in the thread that far. I actually think I bought them but Dorman seemed easier to put on. The Dorman I got did not have a filter so I took one off of the ones I bought from Cruiser Dan and put it on Dorman. I mentioned this earlier in the thread with a photo. I have put a huge amount of effort, time and money into this restoration. I thought it was finally time to drive and now, 4wd is now staying on. Did you ever reach a place where a labor of love reaches a tipping point? I was really ready to just drive my project for awhile and here I am working on it. Not to mention I made a purchase from a Mud member before Christmas and for pretty much the first time ever I got screwed over on a Mud purchase. I will write a long post about this in the near future so others can stay clear of this individual. For now, I will see if I can get 4wd working. I don't think the Dorman is bad because that was installed because 4wd would not come on.

Correct, I used the part off the pickup that Randy listed. About 2 minutes with the dremel, as described earlier in the thread, and it was good to go. VSV for the FJ62 is a couple hundred bucks because they made less of them. As for military discount, I just asked for it at the parts counter, I think they gave me 10% off.

Thanks for the feedback. I actually think I bought two of those from Dan. Got to start rummaging through the parts and see if I can find them. Just hoping that changing the other will solve the 4wd staying on. Of all the well thought out designs Toyota has come out with over the years this is certainly not one of them.
By the way, Lowes and Home Depot generally offer ten percent military if you ask for it.

In doing this repair I ordered the parts from Cruiser Dan, buying two so one would be on hand for a repair. Based on research here I concluded that the lower (red) VSV was faulty. 4WD would not activate when high range switch on dash engaged. Replacement went smoothly and while unit was on jack stands 4WD was tested and did engage. After putting 62 back on road a new symptom has developed. 4WD does not disengage using dash switch. It is necessary to unlock hubs to regain 2WD operation. Anybody have any input on this issue? Anyone run into this issue?

Hello, I have had my 89 FJ62 for 4 years but I am new to the forums. My four wheel drive has stopped working and I'm trying to figure out if my problem is the bad solenoid. going to list my symptoms.
-hubs locked and press 4 wheel high button i can not turn drive shaft by hand
-hubs unlocked and 4 wheel button off i can turn drive shaft easily
-4 wheel light comes on and goes off normal
-hubs locked shifted to 4 wheel low and drive shaft not turning
any suggestions or help with this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Jay,
the four points you listed sound like a perfectly functioning 4WD. Maybe you made an error when typing or I may be missing something.

When the hubs are locked and I'm in 2 wheel, shouldn't the front drive shaft be turning? Mine does not.

The front drive shaft should spin when the hubs are locked (VEHICLE IN MOTION).

Thanks cruiserdan, I know the 4 wheel was working last year. I was attempting to move it in the snow/ice last week and the rear wheel was spinning on ice and the front would not engage no matter what I did. I checked the forums to try and find a solution. The front drive shaft can not be moved when I have it in 4wheel so that's why I was thinking it might be electrical or the solenoid.

The solenoid that this thread discusses puts the truck in 4WD all the time when it fails.

With hubs locked the driveshaft should spin or if parked the driveshaft should not be able to turn. The other line items you described suggest your 4WD is working.

I assume you have open differentials. This means if the front right tire is in the air and the front left tire has traction; the front right one will spin. This is 4WD.

Differential lockers (ARB, Detroit, genright, TRD eLockers) allow the front and rear tires to engage and not spin when in the air or have a loss of traction.

Your hub could be overstuffed with grease, or otherwise jammed, and not engaging. It's a quick job to pull the hubs, clean, and lightly grease (as indicated by Toyota - not packed!) and reassemble.

Hi question regarding the 4wd solenoids/vacuum setup

My solenoids and they are working OK - my problem is I need to suck on the hose to change in and out of 4wd - which isn't a good look and is a bit of a pain in the arse. I've been doing this because the single vacuum hose that goes into the y before the solenoids has been disconnected at the OTHER end (that provides the suck), I think it has been since the engine was rebuilt and I am not sure where it should be connected to provide vacuum to the solenoids. There are plenty of places I could put it but would rather connect it to the right place. ( I have an HJ 60 09/1985 with the dash push button 4wd switch.

Could anyone please tell me or even better post a diagram or picture where the other end of the solenoid vacuum valve hose should be attached. I have had 3 people tell me 3 different places!
Or I could just extend the hose into the cab and keep changing into 4wd by sucking on the hose . But would rather not.
Any help much appreciated.
Cheers
Pete
